US Market Indexes Continue Consecutive Closing Records

S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite report six consecutive closing highs

U.S. market indexes were higher on Tuesday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 25,385.80 for a gain of 102.80 points or 0.41%. The S&P 500 Index closed at 2,751.29 for a gain of 3.58 points or 0.13%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 7,163.58 for a gain of 6.19 points or 0.09%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher for the day at 10.06 for a gain of 0.54 points or 5.67%.

Tuesday’s market movers

The S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite have now closed at new record highs every day of the new year. Expectations for increased earnings from tax reform have been fueling gains. Health care and financial stocks led gains on Tuesday.

The NFIB Small Business Optimism Index was reported on Tuesday. The Index decreased to 104.9 from 107.5.

In the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the following stocks led gains:

Boeing (BA, Financial) 2.67%

Johnson & Johnson (JNJ, Financial) 1.59%

General Electric (GE, Financial) 1.53%

United Technologies (UTX, Financial) 1.09%

Goldman Sachs (GS, Financial) 0.85%

JPMorgan (JPM, Financial) 0.51%

Small-cap stocks

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 Index closed at 1,560.10 for a loss of -1.71 points or -0.11%. The S&P 600 Index closed at 949.60 for a loss of -0.59 points or -0.06%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 9,631.08 for a gain of 2.24 points or 0.02%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 10,317.23 for a loss of -35.92 points or -0.35%.

Other notable indexes

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,942.50 for a loss of -3.61 points or -0.19%; the S&P 100 Index at 1,218.12 for a gain of 2.02 points or 0.17%; the Russell 3000 Index at 1,625.92 for a gain of 1.57 points or 0.10%; the Russell 1000 Index at 1,523.57 for a gain of 1.73 points or 0.11%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 710.47 for a loss of -2.74 points or -0.38%.
