US Market Indexes Close Lower on Tuesday

U.S. market indexes were lower on Tuesday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 25,007.03 for a loss of -171.58 points or -0.68%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,765.31 for a loss of -17.71 points or -0.64%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 7,511.01 for a loss of -77.31 points or -1.02%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher at 16.46 for a gain of 0.68 points or 4.31%.

Tuesday’s market movers

Goldman Sachs (GS, Financial) and Boeing (BA, Financial) reported afternoon losses that effected returns in the Dow Jones Tuesday while tech stocks were also lower. Sectors leading losses for the day included technology and financials.

Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • The NFIB Small Business Optimism Index increased to 107.6 from 106.9.
  • The Consumer Price Index reported a monthly increase of 0.2% and an annual increase of 2.2%.
