The S&P 500 closed at 2,640.87 for a gain of 35.87 points or 1.38%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 7,063.44 for a gain of 114.22 points or 1.64%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 19.84 for a loss of -3.03 points or -13.25%.
For the week, the Dow Jones was down -0.39%, the S&P 500 reported a loss of -0.69% and the Nasdaq Composite reported a loss of -2.31%. For the month, the Dow Jones was down -0.31%, the S&P 500 reported a gain of 0.42% and the Nasdaq gained 1.80%. For the quarter, the Dow Jones reported a loss of -2.3%, the S&P 500 was down -1.2% and the Nasdaq gained 2.3%.
Thursday’s market movers
Stocks regained some of the week’s earlier losses with a strong closing on the last day of the month. Technology stocks were higher for the day with the S&P 500 technology sector gaining 2.0%. Energy and materials also led gains.
Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:
- Jobless claims decreased by -12,000 for the week to a total of 215,000.
- Personal income increased 0.4% for the month. The PCE Price Index reported a 1.8% annual increase.
- The University of Michigan’s Consumer Sentiment Index decreased to 101.4 from 102.0.
- The Baker Hughes rig count decreased to 1,127 from 1,156.
- Mortgage rates were lower for the week. The 30-year fixed-rate mortgage average decreased to 4.44% and the 15-year fixed-rate mortgage average decreased to 3.90%.

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,529.42 for a gain of 16.39 points or 1.08%. The S&P 600 closed at 938.46 for a gain of 9.16 points or 0.99%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 9,500.62 for a gain of 116.19 points or 1.24%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9,813.64 for a gain of 86.71 points or 0.89%.
