US Market Indexes Close Higher on Tuesday

Dow Jones closes at 24,033.36 with a gain of 1.65%

U.S. market indexes were higher on Tuesday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 24,033.36 for a gain of 389.17 points or 1.65%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,614.45 for a gain of 32.57 points or 1.26%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 6,941.28 for a gain of 71.16 points or 1.04%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 21.10 for a loss of -2.52 points or -10.67%.

Tuesday’s market movers

Technology stocks reported some valuation recoveries on Tuesday. Amazon (AMZN, Financial) gained 1.46% and Facebook (FB, Financial) gained 0.46%. Overall, the S&P 500 technology sector reported a gain of 0.99%. Other sectors leading gains included energy and health care.

Motor vehicle sales were the only major report on the economic calendar. The preliminary data showed motor vehicle sales at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 17.5 million. The Federal Reserve also announced on Tuesday it is naming John Williams as the new president of the New York Fed.

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,512.15 for a gain of 19.62 points or 1.31%. The S&P 600 closed at 930.92 for a gain of 13.68 points or 1.49%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 9,374.73 for a gain of 113.54 points or 1.23%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9,750.53 for a gain of 145.85 points or 1.52%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,860.37 for a gain of 25.06 points or 1.37%; the S&P 100 at 1,146.26 for a gain of 14.61 points or 1.29%; the Russell 3000 at 1,549.33 for a gain of 19.05 points or 1.24%; the Russell 1000 at 1,449.80 for a gain of 17.75 points or 1.24%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 677.83 for a gain of 7.73 points or 1.15%.
