The S&P 500 closed at 2,614.45 for a gain of 32.57 points or 1.26%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 6,941.28 for a gain of 71.16 points or 1.04%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 21.10 for a loss of -2.52 points or -10.67%.
Tuesday’s market movers
Technology stocks reported some valuation recoveries on Tuesday. Amazon (AMZN, Financial) gained 1.46% and Facebook (FB, Financial) gained 0.46%. Overall, the S&P 500 technology sector reported a gain of 0.99%. Other sectors leading gains included energy and health care.
Motor vehicle sales were the only major report on the economic calendar. The preliminary data showed motor vehicle sales at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 17.5 million. The Federal Reserve also announced on Tuesday it is naming John Williams as the new president of the New York Fed.

The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 9,374.73 for a gain of 113.54 points or 1.23%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9,750.53 for a gain of 145.85 points or 1.52%.
