The S&P 500 closed at 2,604.47 for a loss of -58.37 points or -2.19%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 6,915.11 for a loss of -161.44 points or -2.28%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher at 21.46 for a gain of 2.52 points or 13.31%.
For the week, the Dow Jones was down -0.7%, the S&P 500 was down -1.4% and the Nasdaq Composite reported a return of -2.1%.
Friday’s market movers
Trade negotiations and the U.S.-China trade battle kept stocks lower on Friday with global trade expected to be a negative long-term market factor. Sectors leading losses included industrials, financials and technology.
Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:
- The March Employment Situation report showed an increase of 103,000 jobs. The unemployment rate remained unchanged at 4.1%.
- The Baker Hughes North American rig count decreased to 1,114 from 1,127.
- The Federal Reserve released its monthly Consumer Credit report. Consumer credit increased $10.6 billion in February.
