US Market Indexes Start the Week Higher on Monday

S&P 500 closes at 2,672.63 with a gain of 0.35%

U.S. market indexes were higher Monday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 24,357.32 with a gain of 94.81 points or 0.39%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,672.63 for a gain of 9.21 points or 0.35%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 7,265.21 for a gain of 55.60 points or 0.77%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 14.70 for a loss of -0.07 points or -0.47%.

Monday’s market movers

U.S. market indexes closed off of trading highs on Monday after President Donald Trump reported he would potentially be announcing a decision on a decertification involving Iran and a nuclear weapons agreement. Oil sector stocks gained approximately 2% for the day as oil prices traded above $70. The S&P 500 energy sector closed with a gain of 0.11%. The S&P 500 technology sector led gains for the day with a gain of 0.67%.

The Federal Reserve’s G.19 - Consumer Credit report was the only major report on the economic calendar Monday. Consumer credit increased $11.6 billion in March.

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,578.92 for a gain of 13.32 points or 0.85%. The S&P 600 closed at 966.49 for a gain of 7.57 points or 0.79%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 9,768.56 for a gain of 95.90 points or 0.99%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 10,057.92 for a gain of 56.77 points or 0.57%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,908.04 for a gain of 10.59 points or 0.56%; the S&P 100 at 1,174.26 for a gain of 4.62 points or 0.39%; the Russell 3000 at 1,587.43 for a gain of 6.67 points or 0.42%; the Russell 1000 at 1,483.09 for a gain of 5.70 points or 0.39%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 688.96 for a loss of -1.62 points or -0.23%.
