The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 13.23 for a loss of -0.19 points or -1.42%.
Thursday’s market movers
U.S. market indexes continued to gain on Thursday with the Dow Jones posting its sixth consecutive positive day. Technology stocks continued to rally and a steady reading on inflation from the Consumer Price Index report also helped investor confidence. In the S&P 500, utilities led gains for the day with the sector posting an increase of 1.41%, while the technology sector followed closely behind with a 1.30% gain.
Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:
- The Consumer Price Index reported a 0.2% monthly gain and a 2.5% annual gain. The core Consumer Price Index minus food and energy posted a 2.1% annual gain.
- Jobless claims were unchanged for the week, keeping the total number of initial claims at 211,000.
- The Fed balance sheet was also released with a total asset level of $4.358 trillion, increasing $2.1 billion from the previous week.
