US Market Indexes Close Higher on Friday

S&P 500 closes at 2,734.62 with a gain of 1.08%

U.S. market indexes were higher Friday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 24,635.21 for a gain of 219.37 points or 0.90%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,734.62 for a gain of 29.35 points or 1.08%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 7,554.33 for a gain of 112.22 points or 1.51%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 13.51 for a loss of -1.92 points or -12.44%

For the week, the Dow was down -0.5%, the S&P 500 gained 0.5% and the Nasdaq Composite had a return of 1.6%.

For the year, the Nasdaq Composite has gained 8.34%, the S&P 500 has a return of 2.56% and the Dow Jones is up 0.55%.

Friday’s market movers

A positive May jobs report helped U.S. market indexes to gain on Friday. In the S&P 500, the technology sector led gains with a return of 1.62%. Utilities and consumer staples were the only sectors in the S&P 500 to report losses.

Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • The May Employment Situation report showed an increase of 223,000 jobs. The unemployment rate decreased to 3.8%.
  • The Purchasing Managers' Manufacturing Index decreased to 56.4 from 56.5.
  • The Institute for Supply Management Manufacturing Index increased to 58.7 from 57.3.
  • Construction spending increased 1.8% for the month and 7.6% for the year.
  • The Baker Hughes rig count increased to 1,159 from 1,140.

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,647.97 for a gain of 14.36 points or 0.88%. The S&P 600 closed at 1,015.57 for a gain of 8.03 points or 0.80%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 10,194.11 for a gain of 88.18 points or 0.87%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 10,391.11 for a gain of 66.90 points or 0.65%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,958.32 for a gain of 11.89 points or 0.61%; the S&P 100 at 1,202.01 for a gain of 13.10 points or 1.10%; the Russell 3000 at 1,627.04 for a gain of 16.37 points or 1.02%; the Russell 1000 at 1,517.76 for a gain of 15.45 points or 1.03%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 696.55 for a gain of 0.56 points or 0.08%.
