The Nasdaq Composite closed at 7,554.33 for a gain of 112.22 points or 1.51%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 13.51 for a loss of -1.92 points or -12.44%
For the week, the Dow was down -0.5%, the S&P 500 gained 0.5% and the Nasdaq Composite had a return of 1.6%.
For the year, the Nasdaq Composite has gained 8.34%, the S&P 500 has a return of 2.56% and the Dow Jones is up 0.55%.
Friday’s market movers
A positive May jobs report helped U.S. market indexes to gain on Friday. In the S&P 500, the technology sector led gains with a return of 1.62%. Utilities and consumer staples were the only sectors in the S&P 500 to report losses.
Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:
- The May Employment Situation report showed an increase of 223,000 jobs. The unemployment rate decreased to 3.8%.
- The Purchasing Managers' Manufacturing Index decreased to 56.4 from 56.5.
- The Institute for Supply Management Manufacturing Index increased to 58.7 from 57.3.
- Construction spending increased 1.8% for the month and 7.6% for the year.
- The Baker Hughes rig count increased to 1,159 from 1,140.

The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 10,194.11 for a gain of 88.18 points or 0.87%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 10,391.11 for a gain of 66.90 points or 0.65%.
