US Market Indexes Continue Gains on Tuesday

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 25,320.73 on Tuesday with a loss of -1.58 points or -0.01%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,786.85 for a gain of 4.85 points or 0.17%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 7,703.79 for a gain of 43.87 points or 0.57%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 12.30 for a loss of -0.05 points or -0.40%.

Tuesday’s market movers

A positive agreement between President Trump and North Korea’s Kim Jong Un helped U.S. market indexes to gain on Tuesday. The Wall Street Journal also reported that the Federal Reserve may move toward holding a press conference after every Federal Open Market Committee monetary policy meeting, which would likely help to provide even greater transparency for federal funds rate and monetary policy changes overall.

The FOMC and European Central Bank are meeting this week. Investors believe the FOMC will raise rates for a second time this year and provide greater insight on whether it will increase rates three or four times in 2018.

In the broad market, utilities, real estate and technology led gains. Top contributors for the day included Restoration Hardware (RH, Financial) with a gain of $36.27 or 30.55% and KMG Chemicals (KMG, Financial) with a gain of $8.75 or 12.41%.

Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • The NFIB Small Business Index increased to 107.8 from 104.8.
  • The Consumer Price Index showed a monthly increase of 0.2% and an annual increase of 2.8%.

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 Index reached a new closing high of 1,682.30 for a gain of 7.62 points or 0.46%. The S&P 600 closed at 1,041.95 for a gain of 0.87 points or 0.08%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 10,462.02 for a gain of 69.93 points or 0.67%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 10,528.84 for a loss of -22.62 points or -0.21%.
