US Market Indexes Close Mostly Lower on Monday

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 24,987.47 on Monday with a loss of -103.01 points or -0.41%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,773.87 for a loss of -5.79 points or -0.21%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 7,747.03 for a gain of 0.65 points or 0.01%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher at 12.34 for a gain of 0.36 points or 3.01%.

Monday’s market movers

U.S. market indexes were mostly lower Monday with trade fears affecting valuations. Stocks continued losses from Friday after China responded to a U.S. tariff announcement, reporting it would match U.S. tariffs with a 25% tariff on agriculture and automotive products.

Technology stocks helped to balance some of the day’s losses with the S&P 500 technology sector gaining 0.11% and the Nasdaq Composite reporting a gain of 0.01%. Technology stocks leading gains included FleetCor Technologies (FLT, Financial) and Square (SQ, Financial), which reported a cryptocurrency license in New York. The consumer staples, health care and industrial sectors reported the day’s top losses.

The NAHB Home Builders’ Index was the only major report on the economic calendar Monday. The Index decreased to 68 from 70.

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,692.06 for a gain of 8.15 points or 0.48%. The S&P 600 closed at 1,045.45 for a gain of 5.91 points or 0.57%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 10,498.70 for a gain of 46.97 points or 0.45%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 10,522.60 for a gain of 52.09 points or 0.50%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,995.13 for a gain of 2.76 points or 0.14%; the S&P 100 at 1,217.44 for a loss of -2.82 points or -0.23%; the Russell 3000 at 1,654.31 for a loss of -1.87 points or -0.11%; the Russell 1000 at 1,541.77 for a loss of -2.66 points or -0.17%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 701.17 for a gain of 0.58 points or 0.08%.
