US Market Indexes Lower With Escalating Trade Concerns

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 24,700.21 on Tuesday with a loss of -287.26 points or -1.15%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,762.57 for a loss of -11.18 points or -0.40%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 7,725.59 for a loss of -21.44 points or -0.28%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher at 13.47 for a gain of 1.16 points or 9.42%.

Tuesday’s market movers

U.S. market indexes continued losses on Tuesday as trade tensions between the U.S. and China continued. The Trump administration reported it would begin to identify $200 billion worth of Chinese import goods to tax if China continued to retaliate in a trade war. The Trump administration’s intentions are for China to improve its unfair trade practices.

Sectors leading losses on Tuesday included industrials and materials. Top detractors included General Motors (GM, Financial), Zuora (ZUO, Financial) and Future FinTech Group (FTFT, Financial).

Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • Housing starts were reported at (SAAR) 1.35 million, an increase from 1.29 million.
  • Building permits decreased to (SAAR) 1.30 million from 1.36 million.

The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 10,486.39 for a loss of -12.31 points or -0.12%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 10,537.58 for a gain of 14.98 points or 0.14%.
