The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 25,064.50 on Thursday with a loss of -134.79 points or -0.53%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,804.49 for a loss of -11.13 points or -0.40%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 7,825.30 for a loss of -29.15 points or -0.37%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher at 12.91 for a gain of 0.81 points or 6.69%.

Thursday’s market movers

Comments from President Trump contributed to losses in the equity market Thursday. Stocks opened lower after further discussions regarding tariffs against European automakers. Equities continued to fall in afternoon trading as well after Trump voiced opposition to further federal funds rate increases from the Federal Reserve. Sectors leading losses for the day included financials, health care and technology.

Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • Jobless claims decreased by -8,000 to 207,000.
  • The Index of Leading Economic Indicators increased 0.5% for the month.
  • The Federal Reserve’s balance sheet showed a weekly increase in assets of $1.4 billion for total assets of $4.291 trillion.

The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 10,572.84 for a gain of 46.11 points or 0.44%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 10,546.31 for a gain of 43.14 points or 0.41%.
