US Market Indexes Rebound, Close With Gains on Tuesday

S&P 500 closes at 2,839.96 with a gain of 0.64%

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 25,299.92 on Tuesday with a gain of 112.22 points or 0.45%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,839.96 for a gain of 18.03 points or 0.64%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 7,870.89 for a gain of 51.19 points or 0.65%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower for the day at 13.29 for a loss of -1.49 points or -10.08%.

Tuesday’s market movers

U.S. market indexes rebounded from losses caused by Turkey’s currency crisis. Treasury yields were also higher, which helped the S&P 500 financial sector to gain. Other sectors leading gains for the day included consumer discretionary, materials and industrials.

Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • The NFIB Small Business Optimism Index increased to 107.9 from 107.2.
  • Import and export prices were higher on an annual basis. Import prices were unchanged for the month and increased 4.8% for the year. Export prices were down -0.5% for the month and increased 4.3% for the year.
  • The Treasury held auctions for four-week bills and 52-week bills at the following rates: four-week bill 1.910%, 52-week bill 2.365%.

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,692.57 for a gain of 17.25 points or 1.03%. The S&P 600 closed at 1,069.53 for a gain of 13.71 points or 1.30%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 10,501.74 for a gain of 104.07 points or 1.00%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 10,592.99 for a gain of 111.12 points or 1.06%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 2,003.29 for a gain of 18.35 points or 0.92%; the S&P 100 at 1,257.62 for a gain of 7.05 points or 0.56%; the Russell 3000 at 1,687.62 for a gain of 11.29 points or 0.67%; the Russell 1000 at 1,575.51 for a gain of 10.07 points or 0.64%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 716.55 for a gain of 5.88 points or 0.83%.
