The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 26,773.94 on Tuesday with a gain of 122.73 points or 0.46%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,923.43 for a loss of -1.16 points or -0.04%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 7,999.55 for a loss of -37.76 points or -0.47%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher at 12.05 for a gain of 0.05 points or 0.42%.

Tuesday’s market movers

Positive North American trade negotiations and an agreement announcement on Monday with Canada helped to fuel continued gains in global large-cap stocks on Tuesday. The Dow Jones closed at a new high. The Dow Jones Large-Cap Value TSM Index was also higher at 5,331.75 for a gain of 12.91 points or 0.24%. Sectors leading gains for the day included utilities, consumer staples and materials.

Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • Preliminary September motor vehicle sales data began to be released on Tuesday with the consensus for vehicle sales at 16.9 million.
  • The Treasury held a 4-week bill auction at a rate of 2.105%.
