US Market Indexes Continue Losses, S&P 500 Down -2.06% Thursday

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 25,052.83 on Thursday with a loss of -545.91 points or -2.13%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,728.37 for a loss of -57.31 points or -2.06%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 7,329.06 for a loss of -92.99 points or -1.25%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher at 24.98 for a gain of 2.02 points or 8.80%.

Thursday’s market movers

A selloff continued in U.S. equities Thursday. Treasury yields were mostly stable albeit at higher levels. The 10-year Treasury closed at 3.14% and the one year at 2.73%. Investors were also watching bank stocks and the financial sector outlook, with the big banks reporting third-quarter earnings Friday and Monday. Sectors leading losses for the day included energy, financial and real estate.

Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • The Consumer Price Index was up 0.1% in September and 2.2% annually.
  • Jobless claims were reported at 214,000, down from 270,000.
  • The Treasury held a 30-year bond auction at a rate of 3.344%.

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,545.38 for a loss of -30.03 points or -1.91%. The S&P 600 closed at 967.23 for a loss of -20.56 points or -2.08%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 9,630.31 for a loss of -174.59 points or -1.78%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9,717.74 for a loss of -246.61 points or -2.47%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,866.73 for a loss of -38.70 points or -2.03%; the S&P 100 at 1,214.29 for a loss of -25.54 points or -2.06%; the Russell 3000 at 1,609.70 for a loss of -33.07 points or -2.01%; the Russell 1000 at 1,508.14 for a loss of -31.12 points or -2.02%; the Wilshire 5000 at 28,198.47 for a loss of -569.01 points or -1.98%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 687.95 for a loss of -16.09 points or -2.29%.
