Stocks Continue Losses, US Market Indexes Flat for the Week

S&P 500 closes at 2,767.78 with a loss of -0.04%

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 25,444.34 on Friday with a gain of 64.89 points or 0.26%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,767.78 with a loss of -1.00 points or -0.04%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 7,449.03 for a loss of -36.11 points or -0.48%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 19.86 for a loss of -0.20 points or -1.00%.

For the week, all of the major indexes were basically unchanged. The Dow reported a gain of 0.6%, the S&P 500 gained 0.3% and the Nasdaq Composite was down -0.10%. Year to date, the Nasdaq leads returns with a gain of 8.93%, the Dow Jones has a return of 4.18% and the S&P 500 has a gain of 4.93%.

Friday’s market movers

U.S. market indexes continued their losses Friday with the Dow Jones and S&P 500 returns for the year now down to approximately 4% and 5% respectively. Volatility in the market was lower Friday with volume mixed across exchanges. NYSE volume was above the 10-day average while Nasdaq volume was below.

Value stocks managed to report gains, bypassing some of the systematic factors with the Dow Jones, Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index and S&P 100 higher for the day. Treasuries continued to be a leading factor overall with the 10-year, two-year spread at 0.2822.

Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • Existing home sales decreased -3.4%, reporting a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 5.15 million.
  • The Baker Hughes North American rig count was unchanged at 1,258.

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,542.04 for a loss of -18.71 points or -1.20%. The S&P 600 closed at 962.06 for a loss of -10.15 points or -1.04%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 9,623.99 for a loss of -127.62 points or -1.31%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9,643.49 for a loss of -40.56 points or -0.42%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,872.17 for a loss of -12.42 points or -0.66%; the S&P 100 at 1,236.09 for a gain of 3.26 points or 0.26%; the Russell 3000 at 1,630.05 for a loss of -3.24 points or -0.20%; the Russell 1000 at 1,528.98 for a loss of -1.82 points or -0.12%; the Wilshire 5000 at 28,563.50 for a loss of -58.64 points or -0.20%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 698.11 for a gain of 3.29 points or 0.47%.
