US Market Indexes Start the Week Higher

Retail sales help to boost US stocks

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 24,640.24 on Monday with a gain of 354.29 points or 1.46%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,673.45 for a gain of 40.89 points or 1.55%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 7,081.85 for a gain of 142.87 points or 2.06%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 92.17 for a loss of 7.12 points or -7.17%.

Monday’s market movers

Stocks were higher Monday after a busy shopping weekend. Black Friday online U.S. sales totaled over $6 billion and Cyber Monday sales are expected to reach more than $1.5 billion. Oil prices were also higher.

In the S&P 500, technology and consumer discretionary led gains.

Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • The Chicago Fed National Activity Index increased to 0.24 in October from 0.14.
  • The Treasury held the following auctions: three-month bill 2.370%, six-month bill 2.475% and two-year note 2.836%.

In small caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,505.96 for a gain of 17.28 points or 1.16%. The S&P 600 closed at 946.40 for a gain of 8.84 points or 0.94%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 9,360.43 for a gain of 125.62 points or 1.36%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9,615.07 for a gain of 88.19 points or 0.93%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,847.77 for a gain of 22.89 points or 1.25%; the S&P 100 at 1,180.46 for a gain of 19.06 points or 1.64%; the Russell 3000 at 1,577.84 for a gain of 23.82 points or 1.53%; the Russell 1000 at 1,478.98 for a gain of 22.75 points or 1.56%; the Wilshire 5000 at 27,618.79 for a gain of 422.22 points or 1.55%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 683.73 for a gain of 7.94 points or 1.17%.
