US Market Indexes Rally, but End Flat Tuesday

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 23,675.64 on Tuesday with a gain of 82.66 points or 0.35%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,546.16 for a gain of 0.22 points or 0.01%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 6,783.91 for a gain of 30.18 points or 0.45%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher at 25.75 for a gain of 1.23 points or 5.02%.

Tuesday’s market movers

U.S. market indexes rebounded slightly on Tuesday after concerns of bear market losses and correction territory returns on Monday.

Meanwhile, a blog post from ZeroHedge reported Wall Street’s biggest ever rotation into bonds: “Wall Street Turns Apocalyptic: 'We Just Had The Biggest Ever Rotation Into Bonds.'”

Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • Building permits increased to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.328 million in November from 1.265 million in October.
  • Housing starts increased 3.2% in November to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.256 million.

In small caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,381.28 for a gain of 3.14 points or 0.23%. The S&P 600 closed at 859.50 for a gain of 1.92 points or 0.22%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 8,565.68 for a gain of 1.45 points or 0.02%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 8,776.84 for a gain of 19.55 points or 0.22%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,699.34 for a gain of 5.03 points or 0.30%; the S&P 100 at 1,136.17 for a gain of 5.54 points or 0.49%; the Russell 3000 at 1,500.73 for a gain of 5.12 points or 0.34%; the Russell 1000 at 1,410.65 for a gain of 4.93 points or 0.35%; the Wilshire 5000 at 26,158.24 for a loss of 1.91 points or -0.01%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 651.64 for a loss of 4.32 points or -0.66%.
