US Market Indexes Report Substantial Rebound Wednesday

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 22,878.45 on Wednesday with a gain of 1,086.25 points or 4.98%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,467.70 for gain of 116.60 points or 4.96%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 6554.36 for a gain of 361.44 points or 5.84%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 29.73 for a loss of -6.34 points -17.58%.

Wednesday's market movers

U.S. market indexes reported a substantial rebound Wednesday after a week-long downtrend. The Nasdaq Composite reported the largest gain with an increase of 5.84%. In the S&P 500, energy and technology led gains. The S&P 500 energy sector was up 6.06% and the technology sector gained 5.73%. Oil prices helped to support the day's gains with their largest one-day increase in two years. Despite the rebound the government is still in the midst of a shutdown with discussion focused on $2 billion for border-wall funding.

Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • The S&P/Case-Shiller Home Price Index was unchanged in October and reported a 5% year over year increase.
  • The Treasury held an auction for five-year notes at a rate of 2.652%.

In small caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1329.43 for a gain of 62.50 points or 4.93%. The S&P 600 closed at 831.87 for a gain of 38.01 points or 4.79%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 8272.43 for a gain of 404.81 points or 5.15%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 8508.35 for a gain of 346.83 points or 4.25%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1639.97 for a gain of 72.57 points or 4.63%; the S&P 100 at 1096.97 for a gain of 54.20 points or 5.20%; the Russell 3000 at 1449.17 for a gain of 68.56 points or 4.97%; the Russell 1000 at 1362.49 for a gain of 64.47 points or 4.97%; the Wilshire 5000 at 25367.54 for a gain of 1216.10 points or 5.04%; and the Dow Jones US Select Dividend Index at 631.62 for a gain of 21.66 points or 3.55%.
