US Market Indexes Continue Gains, Dow Adds 1.09% Tuesday

Stocks rally for a third day

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 23,787.45 on Tuesday with a gain of 256.10 points or 1.09%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,574.41 for a gain of 24.72 points or 0.97%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 6,897.00 for a gain of 73.53 points or 1.08%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 20.36 for a loss of 1.04 points or -4.86%.

Tuesday’s market movers

U.S. market indexes reported a third day of closing gains on Tuesday. Positive trade talk reports with China continued to help stocks. Meanwhile, the government continued to remain partially shutdown. President Trump will address the nation on Tuesday night at 9 p.m. Eastern to discuss the need for border wall funding, which has been the main factor in the extended shutdown.

Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • The NFIB Small Business Optimism Index decreased to 104.4 in December from 104.8.
  • The Treasury held an auction for three-year notes at a rate of 2.559%.
  • Consumer credit outstanding increased by $22.2 billion in November.

In small caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,426.55 for a gain of 21.19 points or 1.51%. The S&P 600 closed at 887.50 for a gain of 13.02 points or 1.49%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 8,874.95 for a gain of 137.69 points or 1.58%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9,022.68 for a gain of 128.10 points or 1.44%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,731.63 for a gain of 28.81 points or 1.69%; the S&P 100 at 1,143.87 for a gain of 10.65 points or 0.94%; the Russell 3000 at 1,517.14 for a gain of 15.81 points or 1.05%; the Russell 1000 at 1,423.71 for a gain of 14.35 points or 1.02%; the Wilshire 5000 at 26,613.79 for a gain of 282.41 points or 1.07%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 657.30 for a gain of 6.90 points or 1.06%.
