US Market Indexes Close Lower for a Second Day Thursday

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 25,169.53 on Thursday with a loss of 220.77 points or -0.87%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,706.05 for a loss of 25.56 points or -0.94%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 7,288.35 for a loss of 86.93 points or -1.18%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher at 16.32 for a gain of 0.94 points or 6.11%.

Thursday’s market movers

U.S. market indexes retreated for a second day with the S&P 500 closing down 0.94%. Investor selling continued after the State of the Union offered few positive economic developments Tuesday night. Thursday’s headlines also included messages that the U.S. and China were far from reaching a deal ahead of a March 1 deadline. Globally, growth outlooks also decreased after a report released from the European Commission.

Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • Jobless claims decreased to 234,000 from 253,000.
  • The Treasury held auctions for four-week bills and 30-year bonds at rates of 2.390% and 3.022%.
  • Consumer credit increased by $17 billion.
  • Freddie Mac’s weekly mortgage market survey showed mortgage rates decreasing. The 30-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 4.41%, decreasing from 4.46%. The 15-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 3.84%, decreasing from 3.89%.

In small caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,505.58 for a loss of 12.44 points or -0.82%. The S&P 600 closed at 935.46 for a loss of 8.86 points or -0.94%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 9,469.24 for a loss of 95.96 points or -1.00%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9,581.36 for a loss of 4.41 points or -0.05%.
