Thursday’s market movers
U.S. market indexes retreated for a second day with the S&P 500 closing down 0.94%. Investor selling continued after the State of the Union offered few positive economic developments Tuesday night. Thursday’s headlines also included messages that the U.S. and China were far from reaching a deal ahead of a March 1 deadline. Globally, growth outlooks also decreased after a report released from the European Commission.
Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:
- Jobless claims decreased to 234,000 from 253,000.
- The Treasury held auctions for four-week bills and 30-year bonds at rates of 2.390% and 3.022%.
- Consumer credit increased by $17 billion.
- Freddie Mac’s weekly mortgage market survey showed mortgage rates decreasing. The 30-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 4.41%, decreasing from 4.46%. The 15-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 3.84%, decreasing from 3.89%.
