US Market Indexes Start the Week With Gains

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 25,891.32 on Tuesday with a gain of 8.07 points or 0.03%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,779.76 for a gain of 4.16 points or 0.15%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 7,486.77 for a gain of 14.36 points or 0.19%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher at 14.97 for a gain of 0.06 points or 0.40%.

Tuesday’s market movers

U.S. market indexes started the week higher on Tuesday. Investors were watching retail stocks and Walmart (WMT, Financial), which reported earnings before the opening bell. Walmart beat estimates for non-GAAP earnings per share and reported in-line revenue. The stock led gains in the Dow Jones with a return of 2.21%. In the S&P 500, materials, utilities, consumer staples and consumer discretionary led gains.

In political news, the U. .began a second week of negotiations with China. Investors were also watching reports over the declared national emergency, which has caused 16 states to file lawsuits. For the day, Treasury yields were all lower and the U.S. Dollar Index fell 0.27%.

Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • The NAHB Housing Market Index increased to 62 in February from 58.
  • The Treasury held auctions for three-month bills at a rate of 2.395% and six-month bills at a rate of 2.455%.

In small caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,574.47 for a gain of 5.22 points or 0.33%. The S&P 600 closed at 980.86 for a gain of 5.62 points or 0.58%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 9911.33 for a gain of 30.43 points or 0.31%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9843.38 for a gain of 22.65 points or 0.23%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,916.27 for a gain of 2.26 points or 0.12%; the S&P 100 at 1219.92 for a gain of 1.96 points or 0.16%; the Russell 3000 at 1646.11 for a gain of 2.66 points or 0.16%; the Russell 1000 at 1,542.66 for a gain of 2.28 points or 0.15%; the Wilshire 5000 at 28,862.43 for a gain of 58.14 points or 0.20%; and the Dow Jones US Select Dividend Index at 695.07 for a gain of 3.08 points or 0.45%.
