Progress on China Trade Helps Stocks Close Higher Friday

Nasdaq has a year-to-date gain of 12.4%

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 26,031.81 on Friday with a gain of 181.18 points or 0.70%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,792.67 for a gain of 17.79 points or 0.64%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 7,527.54 for a gain of 67.84 points or 0.91%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 13.61 for a loss of 0.85 points or -5.88%.

For the week, the Nasdaq gained 0.81%, the S&P 500 gained 0.76% and the Dow Jones gained 0.60%. Year to date, the Nasdaq has a gain of 12.4%, the S&P 500 has a gain of 11.4% and the Dow Jones has gained 10.8%.

Friday’s market movers

Stocks gained Friday, helping indexes to close with gains for the week. Negotiations with China topped headlines as President Trump joined the discussions Friday. Reports stated that a currency deal has been reached and that progress is being made toward additional agreements.

In the S&P 500, technology, health care, industrials and consumer discretionary led gains. Treasury yields were mostly lower Friday with the 10-year note reporting a yield of 2.654%. The U.S. Dollar Index was down 0.06% to 96.55 and the U.S. dollar was weaker in trading with the yuan at an exchange rate of 6.71.

On the economic calendar, the Baker Hughes North American oil rig count decreased to 1,259 from 1,275. Several Federal Reserve officials were also involved in the 2019 U.S. Monetary Policy Forum in New York City.

In small caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,590.06 for a gain of 14.51 points or 0.92%. The S&P 600 closed at 987.29 for a gain of 4.34 points or 0.44%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 10,016.66 for a gain of 106.49 points or 1.07%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9,890.86 for a gain of 23.91 points or 0.24 %.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,933.72 for a gain of 15.36 points or 0.80%; the S&P 100 at 1,225.06 for a gain of 7.62 points or 0.63%; the Russell 3000 at 1,654.54 for a gain of 11.30 points or 0.69%; the Russell 1000 at 1,549.97 for a gain of 10.31 points or 0.67%; the Wilshire 5000 at 28,986.32 for a gain of 187.02 points or 0.65%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 702.60 for a gain of 4.67 points or 0.67%.
