US Market Indexes Close Lower for a Second Day

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 25,806.63 on Tuesday with a loss of 13.02 points or -0.05%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,789.65 for a loss of 3.16 points or -0.11%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 7,576.36 for a loss of 1.21 points or -0.02%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher at 14.76 for a gain of 0.13 points or 0.89%.

Tuesday’s market movers

Stock values continued to fall for a second day with U.S. market indexes reporting marginal losses Tuesday. Investors continued to watch U.S. and China trade progression with uncertainty. Biotech stocks also fell after an announcement that the Food and Drug Administration’s commissioner was resigning.

Demand for safe havens was higher, leading to Treasury price increases across the yield curve. The 30-year bond’s price increased 0.14% to a yield of 3.085%.

Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • The Markit Services PMI increased to 56.0 in February from 54.2.
  • The ISM Non-Manufacturing PMI increased to 59.7 in February from 56.7.
  • New home sales increased 3.7% in December to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 621,000, up from 599,000.
  • The Monthly Treasury Statement showed a surplus of $9 billion in January following a deficit of -$14 billion.

In small caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,568.28 for a loss of 7.15 points or -0.45%. The S&P 600 closed at 964.83 for a loss of 4.29 points or -0.44%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 9,896.60 for a loss of 42.14 points or -0.42%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9,721.93 for a loss of 27.64 points or -0.28%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,907.77 for a loss of 8.16 points or -0.43%; the S&P 100 at 1,229.75 for a gain of 0.32 points or 0.03%; the Russell 3000 at 1,650.26 for a loss of 2.50 points or -0.15%; the Russell 1000 at 1,547.33 for a loss of 1.98 points or -0.13%; the Wilshire 5000 at 28,923.11 for a loss of 40.06 points or -0.14%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 698.94 for a loss of 0.78 points or -0.11%.
