US Market Indexes Continue Gains to Close Mostly Higher Tuesday

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 25,554.66 on Tuesday with a loss of 96.22 points or -0.38%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,791.52 for a gain of 8.22 points or 0.30%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 7,591.03 for a gain of 32.97 points or 0.44%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 13.77 for a loss of 0.56 points or -3.91%.

Tuesday’s market movers

U.S. market indexes continued to gain, closing mostly higher for a second day. Among the top indexes, the Dow Jones was lower, affected by losses from Boeing (BA, Financial) following the challenges from Sunday’s Boeing 737 Max crash.

Around the world, the U.K. Parliament voted against Theresa May’s Brexit deal, potentially delaying the U.K.’s withdrawal from the European Union planned for March 29. Also making headlines Tuesday was a report concluding that Chinese hackers have been breaching national security and stealing national security information from the Navy and its partners.

U.S. economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • The NFIB Business Optimism Index increased to 101.7 in February from 101.2.
  • The Consumer Price Index increased 0.2% in February and 1.5% annually.
  • The Treasury held an auction for 10-year notes at a rate of 2.615%.

In small caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,549.83 for a gain of 0.96 points or 0.06%. The S&P 600 closed at 948.04 for a loss of 1.20 points or -0.13%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 9,803.30 for a gain of 18.61 points or 0.19%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9,558.96 for a loss of 2.36 points or -0.02%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,888.27 for a gain of 2.98 points or 0.16%; the S&P 100 at 1,232.94 for a gain of 3.37 points or 0.27%; the Russell 3000 at 1,649.47 for a gain of 4.60 points or 0.28%; the Russell 1000 at 1,547.97 for a gain of 4.58 points or 0.30%; the Wilshire 5000 at 28,905.09 for a gain of 76.35 points or 0.26%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 701.69 for a gain of 2.09 points or 0.30%.
