US Market Indexes Close Higher Friday

S&P 500 has a year-to-date gain of 12.6%

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 25,848.87 on Friday with a gain of 138.93 points or 0.54%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,822.48 for a gain of 14.00 points or 0.50%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 7,688.53 for a gain of 57.62 points or 0.76%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 12.93 for a loss of 0.57 points or -4.22%.

For the week, the Nasdaq gained 3.1%, the S&P 500 gained 2.4% and the Dow Jones gained 2.2%. For the year, the Nasdaq has a gain of 15.0%, the S&P 500 has a gain of 12.6% and the Dow Jones has a gain of 10.2%.

Friday’s market movers

U.S. market indexes closed higher Friday, reporting their best weekly gains since February. Boeing rebounded, helping the Dow Jones to gain 0.54% for the day. Economic data was also positive, supporting stock demand. On Friday, President Trump also vetoed a resolution blocking his national emergency declaration, which still may face some legal challenges.

Economic reports affecting market trading for the day included the following:

  • The University of Michigan’s Consumer Sentiment Index increased to 97.8 in March from 93.8.
  • Industrial production increased 0.1% in February and 3.5% year over year.
  • The Baker Hughes North American oil rig count decreased to 1,187 from 1,216.

In small caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,553.53 for a gain of 3.90 points or 0.25%. The S&P 600 closed at 947.26 for a gain of 0.46 points or 0.05%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 9,842.41 for a gain of 23.90 points or 0.24%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9,542.91 for a loss of 6.71 points or -0.07%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,895.75 for a gain of 3.31 points or 0.17%; the S&P 100 at 1,247.46 for a gain of 6.69 points or 0.54%; the Russell 3000 at 1,665.84 for a gain of 7.48 points or 0.45%; the Russell 1000 at 1,564.23 for a gain of 7.26 points or 0.47%; the Wilshire 5000 at 29,193.54 for a gain of 129.10 points or 0.44%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 703.87 for a gain of 2.28 points or 0.32%.
