Tuesday’s market movers

Lower risk appetite detracted from the day’s valuations as investors watched China trade headlines and looked to the Federal Reserve’s March meeting, which ends Wednesday. The U.S. and China will resume trade negotiations next week, with U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin flying to Beijing to meet with Chinese Vice Premier Liu He. Representatives are hoping for a trade agreement by the end of April. On Wednesday, investors will be closely watching the Fed for its interest rate decision, new economic projections and balance sheet management.

In Treasuries Tuesday, yields decreased on the short end of the curve and increased on the longer end with the 30-year bond reporting a yield of 3.026%. The U.S. Dollar Index was down 0.10% to 96.42. Gold prices gained with the April gold futures price up 0.38% to $1,306.40.

Factory orders was the only major report on the economic calendar Tuesday. Factory orders increased 0.1% in January.
