Thursday’s market movers

U.S. market indexes closed lower Thursday. Ongoing trade negotiations with China and now Europe have investors uncertain over final deal agreements. In Europe, leaders also agreed to allow more time for the U.K.'s exit with an extension until Oct. 31. Meanwhile, wavering global economic data overall along with negative corporate earnings estimates reduced risk appetite Thursday. JPMorgan (JPM, Financial) and Wells Fargo (WFC, Financial) will report earnings on Friday, giving some insight into the first quarter's direction. Analysts, however, are already projecting corporate earnings for the S&P 500 collectively to be down -4.2% year over year.

Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • Jobless claims decreased to 196,000 from 204,000.
  • The Producer Price Index increased 0.6% in March and 2.2% annually.
  • The Core Producer Price Index (excluding food and energy) increased 0.3% in March and 2.4% annually.
  • The Treasury held auctions for four-week bills at a rate of 2.375% and 30-year bonds at a rate of 2.930%.
  • Mortgage rates were slightly higher according to Freddie Mac's weekly mortgage market survey. The 30-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 4.12%, increasing from 4.08%. The 15-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 3.60%, increasing from 3.56%.
