Amazon (AMZN, Financials) is facing pushback from some of its own engineers as the company keeps spending heavily on AI data centers.
A group of Amazon engineers reportedly attended a Seattle City Council hearing to support proposals that would slow or add more oversight to large data center projects in the area.
The timing matters. Amazon is building more AI and cloud infrastructure, but it is also cutting jobs in parts of the business. That contrast has created frustration among some employees.
For Amazon, data centers are important. They help power AWS, AI tools and the company's long-term cloud growth. But for local communities and some workers, the question is different: how fast should these projects grow, and who pays the cost in energy use, land and jobs?
