US Indexes Close Slightly Lower Tuesday

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 26,048.51 on Tuesday with a loss of 14.17 points or -0.05%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,885.72 for a loss of 1.01 points or -0.03%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 7822.57 for a loss of 0.60 points or -0.01%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher at 16.02 for a gain of 0.08 points or 0.50%.

Tuesday’s market movers

U.S. stocks ended slightly lower on Tuesday with several areas of resistance capping the market’s recent catalysts. Chinese bond stimulus measures and new trade threats between the U.S. and China weighed on valuations overall. In the S&P 500, industrials and utilities led losses. In technology, the S&P 500 technology sector ended mostly flat while the Nasdaq reported a loss of 0.01% with several headwinds affecting trading demand. Chinese technology relationships continue to cause volatility for the sector. Meanwhile, the House Judiciary Committee began a hearing on Tuesday to analyze anti-competitive practices, specifically at the largest U.S. technology companies.

  • The NFIB Business Optimism Index increased to 105.0 in May from 103.5.
  • The Producer Price Index increased 0.1% in May and 1.8% year over year.
  • The Treasury held an auction for three-year notes at a rate of 1.861%.
