Monday’s market movers
Markets closed mostly flat Monday with investors concerned over global growth after a weak data report on eurozone manufacturing activity. The eurozone manufacturing PMI reported an 83-month low at 45.6, down from 47 and missed expectations of 47.3. Germany was of central concern with one of the lowest readings in the eurozone. On the international front, investors were also watching comments from the United Nations General Assembly, where tensions with Iran over alleged oil strikes was a key focus.
Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:
- The Chicago Fed National Activity Index decreased to 0.10 in August from 0.41.
- The Markit Composite PMI increased to 51 in September from 50.7. Separately, the Markit Manufacturing PMI increased to 51.0 from 50.3 and the Markit Services PMI increased to 50.9 from 50.7.
- The Treasury held auctions for three-month bills at a rate of 1.905% and six-month bills at a rate of 1.860%.
In the S&P 500, consumer staples led gains and health care led losses. In the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the following stocks led gains and losses:
