The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 26,787.36 on Monday with a loss of 29.23 points or -0.11%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,966.15 for a loss of 4.12 points or -0.14%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 8,048.65 for a loss of 8.39 points or -0.10%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 14.83 for a loss of 0.75 points or -4.81%.

Monday’s market movers

U.S. stocks traded mostly flat on Monday with bond markets closed for the Columbus Day holiday. Investors showed some skepticism over the terms of Friday’s phase one China trade deal with reports suggesting significantly more negotiation needed for a final agreement. Negotiators are reportedly looking to a target deadline of next month with a potential agreement to be signed at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit in Chile.

Federal government offices were closed due to the Columbus Day holiday with no reports on the economic calendar. In the S&P 500, utilities led losses and financials led gains. In the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the following stocks led losses and gains:

The Dow Jones U.S. Small-Cap Growth Index closed at 9,600.50 for a loss of 42.45 points or -0.44%. The Dow Jones U.S. Small-Cap Value Index closed at 9,265.28 for a loss of 29.99 points or -0.32%.
