Brookfield Renewable falls short of 3rd-quarter expectations

Dow stocks were in the green on Monday, with Boeing (BA, Financial) and Walgreens (WBA, Financial) leading gains in the index. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.01% to 27,684, the S&P 500 index fell 0.21% to 3,086 and the Nasdaq Composite Index slid 0.20% to 8,458.

Non-index stocks have also posted gains and losses recently. Shares of Brookfield Renewable Partners L.P. (BEP, Financial) gained almost 1.5% on Monday after it announced third-quarter results. The company posted a loss of 17 cents per share, falling 18 cents short of earnings estimates. Revenue of $642 million also fell $7 million short of expectations.

During the quarter, the company generated funds from operations of $133 million, up from $105 million in the prior-year quarter. The hydroelectric segment generated funds from operations of $125 million, up 20% from a year ago. The generation was below the long-term average level, but so far this year has exceeded the long-term average by 5%. The wind and solar segments generated $72 million in funds from operations, up 20%, and the storage and other segments generated $6 million.

During the quarter ended June 30, Jim Simons (Trades, Portfolio)' Renaissance Technologies reduced its holding by 19% to 32,338 shares.

The main European stock markets traded in the red.The U.K.'s FTSE 100 fell 0.42%, France's CAC 40 advanced 0.07%, Germany's Dax dipped 0.23% and Spain's IBEX 35 declined 0.06%.

In Asia, Japan's Nikkei 225 fell 0.26%, India’s BSE Sensex gained 0.05%, Hong Kong's Hang Seng declined 2.72% and China's Shanghai Composite swelled 1.86%.
