U.S. movie theater operator, Regal Entertainment (NYSE:RGC), gained markedly on news of Cineworld Group’s interest in acquiring Regal for a large premium. With this acquisition, Cineworld will become the second largest theater chain in the world, with a foothold in the U.S., Central/Eastern Europe and the U.K. The Fund began the purchase of Cineworld during the quarter, as the company presented a compelling investment opportunity, with an attractive valuation, healthy cash flows, proven business operations and history of immediately accretive acquisitions.

From the Polaris Global Value Fund fourth quarter 2017 shareholder letter.

Regal Entertainment (NYSE:RGC), a U.S. theater operator, detracted from consumer discretionary sector results after missing consensus estimates. The lower-than-expected revenue was primarily due to softer box office attendance, although average ticket pricing trends increased. Markets were also wary about the shorter exclusivity period from theater to DVD/on-demand and a new “movie pass” subscription service. We believe the $10 per month unlimited pass will actually be a net positive for theaters, as more visitors equate to more money spent at concessions, a major profit source for theaters. Additionally, Regal made a $173 million acquisition of theaters in Houston, Kansas and

Commentary on holdings and market

October 5, 2017

Dear Fellow Shareholder,

The Polaris Global Value Fund returned 3.74% for the third quarter of 2017. While we are pleased with the absolute positive performance, results lagged the MSCI World Index which returned 4.84%. This marked the third consecutive quarter of global growth stocks surpassing value stocks, a trend that will inevitably reverse course in due time. Overall, global stock markets delivered healthy gains, spurred on by earnings growth, upswings in general economic data and diminished political uncertainty in Europe. Even the escalating tensions on the Korean peninsula and the rash of natural disasters in

Regal Entertainment remains steadfast

Regal Entertainment (RGC), the $2.73 billion Tennessee-based parent company of Regal Cinemas, reported a 0.8% revenue increase year over year to $1.59 billion and a contrasting (-)3% profit decline to $72 million in the first half of the year (4.5% margin vs. 4.7% in the year prior).

Overall expenses rose by 0.78% while the company received lower recognized profits in National CineMedia and from other nonconsolidated entities thus resulting in lower profits. National CineMedia provides in-theater advertising for its theatrical exhibition partners, which are Regal Entertainment, AMC Entertainment (AMC) and Cinemark (CNK).

Dividend investors like me hunt for the best yields and if they buy, they try to catch the next quarter dividend very fast. In order to receive the next dividend, it is necessary to take a look at the ex-dividend date. If you own a share or fund before this day, you will receive the next dividend. I always have a big picture of stocks that go ex-dividend in the near future in order to get quick cash back from my investments. Sure it’s not a trading strategy because after the ex-dividend date, the stock is also traded lower in

I have identified five stocks that have seen a lot of trading over the last week. While I believe MGIC Investment (MTG) is the bad apple of this group, I noticed that First Horizon (FHN), Regal Entertainment (RGC), Merck (MRK), and AmerisourceBergen (ABC) are good choices for certain portfolios. In this article, I will explore five companies that are reacting to recently reported earnings to see if they present any opportunities for investors. Nice article on Howard Marks with a thoughtful quote included: "There’s no such thing as a bad asset. It’s a question of pricing." Here it is: Howard Marks was failing miserably. It was 1977, and the research group he oversaw at Citibank (C) had recommended Nifty 50 stocks that lost 90 percent of their value over the previous decade. Then Peter Vermilye, Citibank’s chief investment officer, gave Marks an option: He could quit research and start a fund focusing on convertible bonds, a niche where neither the New York bank nor Marks had any experience. He jumped at the chance.

Following up my post on Reading (RDI), I thought it'd be useful to analyze the movie industry. I'm doing this mainly for two reasons 1) to show just how conservative my valuation of Reading was and how much potential upside there could be and 2) to flush out my thoughts on Carmike (CKEC), which I believe could also be deeply undervalued (though with considerably more risk than Reading). First up, there are three publicly traded pure plays on the cinema industry- Regal (RGC), Carmike (CKEC), and Cinemark (CNK). I'm excluding Marcus Corp (MCS) because it also owns and operates some
