Viacom Inc is a global media company. It creates compelling television programs, motion pictures, short-form content, applications and games. Its brands include MTV, VH1, CMT, Logo, BET, Nickelodeon, Comedy central, TV Land, SPIKE, Tr3s, and VIVA.

Viacom is a global media company with several leading cable network properties, including Nickelodeon, MTV, BET, Comedy Central, VH1, Country Music Television, and Spike TV. Viacom has also built several online properties on the strength of these brands. Viacom's Paramount Pictures produces original motion pictures and owns a library of 2,500 films, including the Godfather and Transformers series. Viacom was spun out of CBS at the end of 2005.

Also detracting from performance was multinational media conglomerate Viacom, Inc. (NASDAQ:VIAB), which saw its shares fall -27.59% during the period. The company reported adjusted EPS of $0.79 vs. consensus of $0.59, with revenues up +8% year-over-year. Despite the positive news, investors remain wary of the company’s ability to execute its strategic plan, as changing media consumption patterns and technology create more general concerns about the cable business model. Nevertheless, Viacom is the owner of valuable content, including children’s programming and comedy, and a leading movie production franchise with more than 3,300 motion pictures in its library. Despite critics’ arguments that fundamentals will remain negative at those media network companies serving kids and teens and at those lacking live sports programming, we believe Viacom’s content will provide attractive economics regardless of the distribution medium.

Some stocks in the portfolio performed quite well. Media company Viacom, Inc. (NASDAQ:VIAB) leapt +33.44% as new CEO Bob Bakish began to implement his vision. In early February, as the company announced earnings per share of $1.04 versus the $ 0.83 consensus, Bakish introduced his five-point strategy. We especially like his decision to emphasize six flagship brands: BET, Comedy Central, MTV, Nickelodeon, Nick Jr., and Paramount. A week later he underscored this point when he asked the CEO of underperforming Paramount to step down. We think focusing on what matters most is smart—and especially important at a complex, intricate organization such as Viacom.

John Rogers Comments on Viacom Inc. - Oct 21, 2016

In addition, media firm Viacom, Inc. (NASDAQ:VIAB) declined -7.61% amidst its management shuffle. As you may know, the company ousted CEO Philippe Dauman in August and temporarily replaced him with Chief Operations Officer Tom Dooley. In late September, Dooley announced he was resigning, effective mid-November. Amidst the turbulence, the company declared a 50% cut in its quarterly dividend—a move we felt was prudent. Clearly in the short term the news from Viacom is unsettling, but we continue to believe in the company’s assets and competitive positioning long term.

During the second quarter, we added media company Viacom, Inc. (NASDAQ:VIAB) to Ariel Fund. While acknowledging investor concerns toward the cable business model stemming from changing media consumption patterns and technology platforms, we view Viacom as an underappreciated security in the market. Also a current holding in Ariel Appreciation Fund, we believe Viacom’s content will provide attractive economics regardless of the distribution medium.
