GuruFocus Profitability Rank ranks how profitable a company is and how likely the company’s business will stay that way. It is based on these factors:

1. Operating Margin
2. Trend of the Operating Margin (5-year average). The company with an uptrend profit margin has a higher rank.
••3. Consistency of the profitability
4. Piotroski F-Score
5. Predictability Rank•

The maximum rank is 10. A rank of 7 or higher means a higher profitability and may stay that way. A rank of 3 or lower indicates that the company has had trouble to make a profit.

Profitability Rank is not directly related to the Financial Strength Rank. But if a company is consistently profitable, its financial strength will be stronger.

Guru Investment Theses on Viacom Inc

John Rogers Comments on Viacom Inc. - Jul 24, 2017

Also detracting from performance was multinational media conglomerate Viacom, Inc. (NASDAQ:VIAB), which saw its shares fall -27.59% during the period. The company reported adjusted EPS of $0.79 vs. consensus of $0.59, with revenues up +8% year-over-year. Despite the positive news, investors remain wary of the company’s ability to execute its strategic plan, as changing media consumption patterns and technology create more general concerns about the cable business model. Nevertheless, Viacom is the owner of valuable content, including children’s programming and comedy, and a leading movie production franchise with more than 3,300 motion pictures in its library. Despite critics’ arguments that fundamentals will remain negative at those media network companies serving kids and teens and at those lacking live sports programming, we believe Viacom’s content will provide attractive economics regardless of the distribution medium.

John Rogers Comments on Viacom - Apr 24, 2017

Some stocks in the portfolio performed quite well. Media company Viacom, Inc. (NASDAQ:VIAB) leapt +33.44% as new CEO Bob Bakish began to implement his vision. In early February, as the company announced earnings per share of $1.04 versus the $ 0.83 consensus, Bakish introduced his five-point strategy. We especially like his decision to emphasize six flagship brands: BET, Comedy Central, MTV, Nickelodeon, Nick Jr., and Paramount. A week later he underscored this point when he asked the CEO of underperforming Paramount to step down. We think focusing on what matters most is smart—and especially important at a complex, intricate organization such as Viacom.

John Rogers Comments on Viacom Inc. - Oct 21, 2016

In addition, media firm Viacom, Inc. (NASDAQ:VIAB) declined -7.61% amidst its management shuffle. As you may know, the company ousted CEO Philippe Dauman in August and temporarily replaced him with Chief Operations Officer Tom Dooley. In late September, Dooley announced he was resigning, effective mid-November. Amidst the turbulence, the company declared a 50% cut in its quarterly dividend—a move we felt was prudent. Clearly in the short term the news from Viacom is unsettling, but we continue to believe in the company’s assets and competitive positioning long term.

Mario Gabelli Comments on Viacom Inc. Guru stock highlight
Viacom Inc. (NASDAQ:VIA) (5.5%)(VIA–$35.45–NASDAQ) is a pure-play content company that owns a global stable of cable networks, including MTV, Nickelodeon, Comedy Central, VH1, BET, and the Paramount movie studio. Viacom’s cable networks generate revenue from advertising sales, fixed monthly subscriber fees, and ancillary revenue from toy licensing, etc. We believe a low valuation and M&A potential outweigh the secular risks of cord-cutting.
