Q1 2027 Deccan Gold Mines Ltd Earnings Call Transcript
Key Points
- Deccan Gold Mines Ltd (BOM:512068) has transitioned from an explorer to a producer, with the Jonnagiri project achieving a production rate of about 1 kilo of gold per day and the Altyn Tor project in Kyrgyzstan commencing doré bar production.
- The company has successfully raised INR137 crore through CCDs, equity shares, and warrants, with participation from high-net-worth individuals and management, to fund exploration and development of its project portfolio.
- The Jonnagiri project has received strong support from the state government, including assistance with land acquisition and a Bhoomi Puja for expansion, with plans to increase processing capacity from 1,000 to 2,500 tons per day, potentially reaching 2 tons of gold per annum by 2029-30.
- The company has a diversified portfolio across gold and critical minerals, with active drilling programs in the Malukona nickel-copper-PGE project in India, the Logrosan tungsten project in Spain, and the lithium-tantalum project in Mozambique, all showing encouraging results.
- The company has strengthened its board with the appointment of Mr. Elango as Chairman and Mrs. Jade Devenish as a director, bringing extensive industry experience and operational expertise to guide future growth.
- The Altyn Tor project in Kyrgyzstan has demonstrated operational viability with the commissioning of the Merrill-Crowe system and gravity circuit, and the company is on track to achieve full-scale production, with tailings and stockpiles providing 4-5 years of production feedstock.
- The company is actively pursuing new gold assets, including a project in Kyrgyzstan offered by the government, and is conducting due diligence on three new assets to fill a production gap by 2028.
- The company has entered into strategic agreements with CECRI for battery technology development and XTerra for critical mineral beach sands, positioning itself in the downstream battery value chain.
- The company has created significant employment and community value, with over 1,000 jobs at Jonnagiri and 200+ at Altyn Tor, which has helped secure government support and goodwill.
- The company's critical mineral portfolio is well-positioned to benefit from rising metal prices, with tungsten prices up 622% and tantalum up 196% in the last year, validating its strategic focus.
- The company's financial results for the June quarter were lower than expected, with only INR6.35 crore profit from Geomysore Services, as gold sales were limited to 59 kilos, and the company holds significant gold inventory (about 80 kilos) that has not yet been sold.
- The company faces uncertainty regarding the Ganajur gold project, which is awaiting a court decision, and despite recent favorable judgments in similar cases, the timeline for resolution remains unclear.
- The company's Tanzanian gold projects are underperforming and have been deprioritized, with results not fully satisfactory compared to other projects.
- The company has significant capital expenditure requirements, estimated at around INR2,000 crore for its project pipeline, which will require a mix of debt, equity, and offtake arrangements, and may strain the balance sheet.
- The company's cash flow from Jonnagiri is limited as dividends from Geomysore Services are unlikely in the current financial year due to reinvestment in expansion, which may disappoint investors expecting near-term returns.
- The company's production guidance for Jonnagiri (500-600 kilos for FY27) and Altyn Tor (150-160 kilos for FY27) is still tentative, and management has deferred providing clear guidance until the next quarter, indicating potential uncertainty.
- The company's operations in Kyrgyzstan face harsh winter conditions (temperatures down to minus 40 degrees), which could impact production continuity and operational efficiency.
- The company's critical mineral projects are at early stages, with resource estimates and feasibility studies still pending, and the company has not provided detailed CapEx or production timelines for these projects, which may be seen as a lack of transparency.
- The company's reliance on external funding and offtake arrangements for critical mineral projects may lead to dilution or loss of control, and the company has not yet secured any such agreements.
- The company's legal challenges, particularly for the Ganajur project, have caused delays, and the company's ability to secure mining leases in a timely manner remains uncertain, which could impact its growth trajectory.
