Is Telephone & Data a good investment at its current valuation multiple?

(Published by Nick McCullum on July 7)

The Dividend Aristocrats list is a great place to begin looking for high-quality dividend growth stocks.

These stocks represent some of the "best of the best" when it comes to dividend longevity.

The requirements to be a Dividend Aristocrat are:

 • Be in the Standard & Poor's 500.
 • Have 25-plus consecutive years of dividend increases.
 • Meet certain minimum size and liquidity requirements.

You can see the full list of all 51 Dividend Aristocrats here.

Telephone & Data Systems Inc. (TDS) is an interesting omission from the Dividend Aristocrats index.

Federal Realty is now the only REIT on the Dividend Aristocrat list

Written by Nicholas McCullum

With the start of the new year, it is now time for the new members of the Dividend Aristocrats to be inducted into the index.

The requirements to be a Dividend Aristocrat are:

 • Be in the S&P 500.
 • Have 25+ consecutive years of dividend increases.
 • Meet certain minimum size and liquidity requirements.

Being a Dividend Aristocrat is an important recognition. The ability (and willingness) to raise dividends for 25 or more consecutive years demonstrates a wide economic moat, sustainable competitive advantage and the kind of shareholder-friendly management that enjoys returning capital to shareholders.

Urban Edge Properties (UE) was spun-off of Vornado Realty (VNO) in January 2015. At $20 billion, VNO is one of the most followed REIT’s in the world. Since the separation however, Yahoo Finance still does not list any Wall Street coverage on UE shares, despite 16 analysts following its former parent company. Is this lack of coverage leading to an undervalued share price?

The Business

UE owns 79 strip shopping centers, 3 malls and one Warehouse Park that were previously under Vornado’s ownership.

Vornado and UE had been together for legacy

I hope you will indulge me by taking the time to read this 4-article series on overvalued businesses and how the “professionals” recommend them and consider if these are really the type of current valuations to projected future prospects that present investment opportunities that you truly believe to be compelling. If your answer to the question is no, then you should really be asking yourself why most people seem to believe that the small, individual investors can’t beat the market? I think it is because the “professionals” spend a great deal of time and money trying to convince us that

Recently I made a screen of the most profitable stocks from the Dividend Aristocrats index. I thought that it makes sense to know what kind of stocks have the highest degree of profitability. The results were impressive and some of my readers liked the idea. Today I screen my Dividend Champions database by the most profitable stocks, measured by the operating margin. Because of the higher amount of screening members – the Dividend Champions list is nearly twice as big as the Dividend Aristocrats index; the results show some fresh ideas. The 20 top stocks have a margin between 24.8

Shorting stocks as a strategy is reserved for people who really know what they are doing. The potential loss for longing equity is 100%, the potential loss for shorting is infinity. On the other hand, shorting is being practiced by so few people so the competition is not as fierce. And in general, people who short tend to do more homework than people who go long.
