The Mosaic Co tops the list

In order to enhance the likelihood of uncovering value stocks, investors may want to look at those companies with a market capitalization surpassing $2 billion but whose price-book ratio is less than 1.5. The following stocks meet this criteria.

The Mosaic Co

The first company that meets the above-listed criteria is The Mosaic Co (MOS).

Shares of the Tampa, Florida-based producer and global marketer of concentrated phosphate and potash crop nutrients were trading at $10.83 per unit at close on April 16 for a market capitalization of $4.1 billion.

Small-cap specialist further trims position in railcar manufacturer

Royce & Associates, the investment firm founded by renowned guru Chuck Royce (Trades, Portfolio) in 1972, disclosed it trimmed its FreightCar America Inc. (RAIL) position by 24.51% on Aug. 31.

The New York-based firm, which specializes in small-cap companies, picks stocks based on an active, bottom-up, risk-conscious and fundamental approach. The portfolio managers also look for value opportunities among companies trading at a discount to enterprise value.

Having reduced its position over the past several quarters, GuruFocus Real-Time Picks, a Premium feature, showed the firm sold an additional 267,339 shares of the Chicago-based company, impacting the

Former Third Avenue manager discusses philosophy and favorite picks

After 28 years in the industry, former Third Avenue manager Chip Rewey has struck out to launch his own firm, Rewey Asset Management, based on the strategies he has seen work the best over his career.

Although the time of his start, at the height of a historic bull market, may give some managers pause, Rewey feels comfortable because he does not own the market, he said. The value manager’s concentrated portfolios contain only 15 to 25 compelling small to mid-cap stocks he believes will appreciate over three to five years, allowing him to be market agnostic.

Kirby Corporation (NYSE:KEX) has the largest inland and coastal tank barge fleet in the U.S. and also draws revenue from servicing and distributing industrial engines, transmissions, parts, and oil field services equipment. The tank barge markets seem to be recovering well, thanks to retirements of older barges, limited new builds, and solid utilization rates. Kirby has also benefited from two recent acquisitions over the last 18 months that are allowing it to drive industry consolidation. In addition, higher land drilling activity resulting from rising oil prices has been stoking demand for new and remanufactured hydraulic fracturing units. It was

From Chuck Royce

Fund Performance

Although the first half was challenging for quality-oriented cyclical small-caps, our high-quality small-cap core offering held its advantage over its small-cap benchmark for the three-, 15-, 20-, 25-year, and since inception (12/31/91) periods ended June 30, 2018. After two calendar years with 20%-plus returns, a moderation in the pace of returns seemed reasonable. Royce Premier Fundadvanced 2.6% for the year-to-date period ended June 30, 2018, underperforming its benchmark, the Russell 2000 Index, which rose 7.7% for the same period.

What Worked… and What Didn't

Of the Fund’s nine equity sectors, seven made positive contributions to first-half performance.

Notes on an interview of Consuelo Mack with Chuck Royce about his investment style and companies he believes are very interesting right now. Royce makes a very unexpected recommendation

Guru Chuck Royce (Trades, Portfolio), famous for the Royce small-cap funds, appeared on a new episode of Consuela Mack last week.

This show is a very interesting source of investment commentary by guru investors. You can watch the show yourself embedded below or, if you are short on time, go with my cliff-notes and commentary. Royce is a specialist in small-cap companies. And I'd say a proponent of a GARP -- growth at a reasonable price -- style. The firm also puts a lot of emphasis on risk management. Another reason to attend next year's conference

It should come as no surprise that the best ideas from a group of renowned professional investors would take off. Checking in on the stocks recommended at last year’s value conference proves they not only gained on average, but substantially outperformed the S&P 500 index.

Though researching anyone’s selections independently before investing is recommended, if investors had purchased every stock presented at the 2016 conference, they would already have made an 8.5% gain since April 29 – when most funds are struggling for returns. These stocks also returned more than double the 3.3% rise of the index over the same

Third Avenue Chip Rewey's ideas, live from GuruFocus Value Conference

Chip Rewey, portfolio manager of Third Avenue's flagship Value Fund and Small-Cap Fund, laid out three stock ideas that he said Warren Buffett (Trades, Portfolio) should be interested in, while speaking at GuruFocus' Value Conference Friday.

The first is Comerica (CMA), a bank headquartered in Texas and currently trading at 18x earnings. Rewey said Comerica has strong credit worthiness, one of the most important attributes for any bank. Comerica had an outstanding underwriting record, even during the financial crisis of 2007 and 2008. Investor fears of the volatility of the energy book has pushed the price down,

Kirby Corp. (NYSE:KEX) is the largest chemical tank barge operator in the United States. While many shipping companies tend to be commodity businesses with low margins and volatile earnings, Kirby is different. Margins on its inland and coastal barge businesses are near 25%, a profile you would expect in a consumer staple company rather than a chemical barge operator. Kirby’s margin profile results from two sources: industry structure and dominant positioning. Kirby operates in a Jones Act market. The Jones Act is a protectionist policy implemented by the United States government in the 1920s, which requires that all goods
