Half Year 2026 Metro Bank Holdings PLC Earnings Call Transcript
Key Points
- Record underlying profit of £61 million, up 34% year-on-year, the highest in Metro Bank Holdings PLC (MTRBF)'s history.
- Exit NIM expanded to 325 basis points, up 30 basis points year-on-year, the largest in the bank's history, with a clear path to 340 basis points from treasury repricing.
- Strong asset rotation: core business lines grew 43% to £1.9 billion, with commercial lending now 44% of the loan book and specialist mortgages 45% of the mortgage book, driving higher yields.
- Lowest deposit cost on the high street at 98 basis points, supported by a 43% current account funding mix, providing a durable funding advantage.
- Cost discipline: costs down 2% year-on-year, with cost-to-income ratio improving to 77%, and a clear mechanical path to 18% ROTE by 2028, with 9.2 percentage points of ROTE uplift already baked in.
- Robust lending pipeline: £1 billion approved commercial and corporate pipeline, with £6 billion in deal flow, 95% direct, supporting expected acceleration in H2 2026.
- Strong asset quality: cost of risk at 22 basis points, well below the 40-60 basis points through-the-cycle guidance.
- Strategic optionality: potential for digital expansion, new store openings, and capital return policy discussions at year-end 2026, enhancing future growth prospects.
- Fee income declined in H1 2026, partially offsetting net interest income growth, with fees expected to remain flat in H2.
- Deposits decreased slightly, with a reduction in fixed-term and high-cost deposits, though this was viewed as positive for cost management.
- Net interest income growth was slower than expected due to timing of lending (back-ended in H1) and a 25 basis point base rate cut at end of 2025, which compressed NIM.
- Exit NIM progression slowed in H1, with the rate of improvement decelerating, though management expects acceleration in H2.
- MREL debt trades at a significant premium, limiting the economics of early buybacks, and capital flexibility remains constrained.
- Interest rate sensitivity is managed with a structural hedge, but the shift to floating-rate assets introduces complexity and potential volatility.
- Cost-to-income ratio remains high at 77%, though improving, indicating ongoing operational inefficiencies.
