Guru stock highlight

Interface, Inc. (NASDAQ:TILE) Interface has been on our radar for some time and during the quarter its stock price reached a level we viewed as an attractive entry point, having declined more than 40% within the past few quarters due to investor concern around the company's level of growth. While we agree that growth in the short-term is likely to be muted, we believe the company's core product - modular carpet - is poised for long-term secular growth.

Interface is the world's leading manufacturer of carpet tile. The strength of its brand and its reputation for

Review of quarter and holdings

Dear Fellow Shareholders:

We are pleased to provide you with the report of the Third Avenue Small-Cap Value Fund (the "Fund") for the quarter ended April 30, 2016.

OVERVIEW

Making the Most of Market Movements without Losing Focus

This quarter was a very active one for the Fund. As noted in the Value Fund letter, volatility reigned supreme. We took advantage of the market's mood swings by initiating six new positions and increasing our exposure in a number of existing holdings. For long-term investors, periods of volatility provide the opportunity to increase our position sizes in line with our discipline

The Russell 2000 has been surging, but the move looks nowhere near done

Over the long-term stocks beat bonds, bonds beat cash, and inflation is a truly destructive force. Ibbotson’s numbers, covering 1926 through 2014, show that small stock returns significantly beat those of their larger brethren.

Based on my own cost of living I’d say the official BLS inflation numbers might better be labeled as BS. Since the Federal Reserve Bank took over the mandate of “price stability” in 1913, the U.S. dollar has lost almost 96% of its purchasing power.

Smaller company stocks hit bottom in February. They’ve been on fire since. Based

FUND PERFORMANCE

Royce Opportunity Fund finished the year-to-date period ended June 30 with a gain of 0.7% versus an increase of 4.8% for its small-cap benchmark, the Russell 2000, for the same period.

The Fund first lost a chunk of ground to its benchmark during a bearish January, which hurt its early results. For the first quarter, Opportunity rose 1.1% compared to 4.3% for the Russell 2000. The second quarter saw another relative disadvantage, made worse by a very difficult June. On the second-to-last day of the month, news of the Greek default wreaked havoc on stock

The week comes to an end and I like to show you the latest dividend grower and share buyback companies in this article.

It was also a hard week for short-term orientated investors because volatility rises due to topics like Ebola and a weaker European economy.

The Dow lost 2.73 percent within the past week while the S&P 500 was down 3.12 percent and NASDAQ down 4.44 percent.

You know that I have not sold any of my stockholdings. I'm not a fearful investor who sells his wonderful businesses and cash-in some money, pay taxes and waiting for new opportunities.

Investing in small- and mid-cap stocks is riskier and more volatile than investing in large-cap stocks. The intrinsic value of the stocks in which the portfolio invests may never be recognized by the broader market. Investing in equity stocks is risky and subject to the volatility of the markets. Ariel Fund often invests a significant portion of its assets in companies within the financial services and consumer discretionary sectors and its performance may suffer if these sectors underperform the overall stock market.

Data from the Department of Commerce released on Tuesday signaled a potential turnaround in the housing market. The department found that the number of building permits in February increased 4.6% from January and 33.8% from February of 2012, to a seasonably adjusted 946,000. Housing starts also increased 0.8% and 27.7% over the same periods to 917,000 – their highest levels since 2008. The information followed another study in February which showed that these new homes are selling faster, too. New housing inventory in recent months fell to historical lows, and the median number of months a new home sits on
