Utility companies are hotbeds of dividend income. Companies in this sector often provide appealing yields

Utility companies are often owned by investors for their dividend income. These so-called “widows and orphan” stocks usually provide market-beating yields, a very attractive feature in a stock for a dividend growth investor. I’ve covered a number of them in my time here at GuruFocus, but two companies have recently rewarded shareholders with a dividend increase.

Southern

Southern Co. (SO) provides electricity and natural gas services to 8 million customers, primarily in the southern United States. The company should generate nearly $22 billion in revenue this year. The stock trades with a market capitalization of $57.4 billion.

PG&E is shutting off the power in order to help prevent wildfires

After wildfires ravaged California last year, utility company PG&E Corp. (PCG) is being more proactive in trying to prevent any blazes from breaking out this year by implementing blackouts across the state as it works to update its aging electrical system. The company, which is the largest utility in the U.S., announced on Monday two fires in the San Francisco Bay Area may have been started by its power lines. While the company’s stock has suffered greatly over the past year, dropping by more than 50%, other utility companies may be thriving.

Brewery, railroad, energy company also among new buys for guru

Jean-Marie Eveillard’s value-oriented investing principles are embraced by First Eagle Investment (Trades, Portfolio), which posted returns just under 3% in 2014. Its returns the year before were nearly five times that.

First Eagle makes hundreds of transactions every quarter. Perhaps one or more of its buys or adds in the third quarter will define the kind of year 2015 is for First Eagle.

First Eagle’s most significant purchase in the third quarter was its acquisition of a 3,513,241-share stake in Texas Instruments Inc. (TXN), a Dallas-based semiconductor company, for an average price of $48.81 per share. The

I love to look for high-quality dividend stocks with a proven long-term track record, but one thing I often notice in my research is that the market gets more and more expensive. But if you would like to make a solid return, you definitely need cheap stocks. With low yields, the valuation rises in an inflationary environment. That's the key premise in our economy. Today I would like to try my best to discover some of the best dividend growth stocks with a current cheap valuation. I use two criteria for screening the Dividend Achievers database: A forward P/E below

Dividend Champions are stocks with consecutive dividend hikes of more than 25 years. At the moment are 103 companies available which have fulfilled these dividend growth criteria.
