The retailer is no longer the high-growth company it once was

Ulta Beauty Inc.'s (ULTA) growth days are over and its shares are no longer attractive, according to Quo Vadis President John Zolidis.

On Thursday, the beauty retailer reported lower fourth-quarter earnings due to lower sales and disappointing guidance. Fiscal 2021 margins will be much lower than the Street thought, as long-time and highly respected CEO Mary Dillon is heading for the exit.

Ulta Beauty has experienced strong revenue and earnings growth over the last three years, beating Target Corp. (TGT) by a significant margin, as shown in the table below:

The beauty retailer beat estimates but still recorded year-over-year earnings declines

After market close on March 11, Ulta Beauty Inc. (ULTA) released its earnings results for the fourth quarter and full year of 2020.

Both earnings and revenue beat analyst consensus estimates. However, this did not provide enough optimism to make up for the year-over-year declines in both the top and bottom lines. Shares fell 9% to around $313.52 before bouncing back slightly in after-market trading following the news.

Earnings results

For the full year, revenue declined 16.8% to $6.2 billion compared to $7.4 billion in fiscal 2019. Adjusted earnings per share came in at $4.66 compared to $11.85 the year

A look at popular growth plays that have caught the eye of gurus

As of March 10, there are only 24 stocks that make it onto the GuruFocus Fast Growers Screener. In order to make this list, stocks must meet the following criteria:

  1. A five-year revenue per share growth rate of at least 20%.
  2. A 10-year revenue per share growth rate of at least 15%.
  3. A five-year Ebitda per share growth rate between 20% and 35%.
  4. A 10-year Ebitda per share growth rate of at least 20%.

They could be bargains

Investors looking for bargains may want to consider the following three businesses, as their stocks have a low price-to-median-price-sales-value when compared to the average of the S&P 500 (which stands at 1.54 as of the writing of this article).

This approach is based on the idea that the stock valuation will revert to its historical (10-year) average in terms of the price-sales ratio. The ratio has the current share price as the numerator and the trailing twelve-month revenue per share times the 10-year median price-sales ratio as the denominator.

Wall Street is also optimistic about these companies, as sell-side analysts

These companies are throwing off cash while maintaining healthy balance sheets

One of the many preset screeners that GuruFocus offers is the "Fast Growers." This screener identifies stocks that have been growing both their revenue per share and Ebitda per share significantly over the past five-year and 10-year periods, which can provide a good starting point for further research on these companies whose business activities are producing clear results.

In order to filter out companies whose growth has come at the expense of their balance sheets, I further narrowed the results of the Fast Growers screener to only include stocks that have a financial strength rating of at least 5

Dow slips as coronavirus lockdowns outweigh stimulus passage

The Dow Jones Industrial Average traded around 30,121.17 on Tuesday, down approximately 100 points from Monday's close of 30,216.45 despite Congress passing over $900 billion in pandemic aid. The 30-stock index tumbled from the record close of 30,303.37 last week on the heels of several European countries enacting travel restrictions on U.K. visitors following reports of a new Covid-19 variant.

The beauty retailer has a growth problem, which can be traced back prior to the pandemic

A Covid-19 vaccine won't help solve Ulta Beauty Inc.'s (ULTA) problem: running out of profitable investment opportunities to maintain sales growth momentum.

That's according to equity analyst John Zolidis, who traces Ulta's growth problem back to well before the Covid-19 pandemic began.

"Ulta Beauty is not the recovery and growth play the bulls want it to be," he said. "ULTA shares are trading near a 52-week high (despite much lower financial forecasts than a year ago) on a misguided investment case rooted in a nostalgia for ULTA's past performance that isn't coming back."

Meanwhile, Ulta Beauty has a negative economic

How Ulta's expansion has been destroying rather than creating shareholder value

Target Corp. (TGT) and Ulta Beauty Inc. (ULTA) have decided to enter a partnership whereby Ulta Beauty will open shops inside Target stores.

The presence of Ulta's e-shops in Target stores is certainly an opportunity for the large retailer to expand its offerings to its customers. As Ulta noted on the announcement of the partnership:

"The durable strategy we have built has made Target a top retail destination. The ease and convenience of our stores and fulfillment services provide broad reach and relevance for the curated brands our guests love," said Brian Cornell, chairman and CEO, Target. "In partnership

These companies have strong financials and good runways for growth

With the S&P 500 up more than 6% year to date despite U.S. gross domestic declining more than 30% in the first half of 2020, many investors who missed the brief window of opportunity during the month-long market crash in March are finding it difficult to find good entry prices for their favorite stocks.

However, much of the index gains are from large-cap tech stocks, which have a higher weighting in the S&P 500. The Dow Jones Industrial Average, which weighs stocks based on share price, is actually down 6% year to date. In other words, there is still plenty

A look at the beauty retailer's results for the second quarter of fiscal 2020

Ulta Beauty (ULTA) recently reported financial results for the second quarter of fiscal 2020.

As expected, it was another difficult quarter for the specialty retailer, with revenues declining by 26% to $1.2 billion and same store sales declining by a comparable amount (-27%) year over year, with a 36% drop in the number of transactions partially offset by a 15% increase in average ticket. As noted in the press release, the results improved meaningfully throughout the quarter: following a -37% comp in early May, the company excited the quarter with a comp of -10% in July, improving to a mid-single

These businesses are highly predictable

An investment strategy based on a buy and hold approach has more chance to prosper if the business is predictable. Such companies typically have a regular record of revenue per share and Ebitda per share, which often go hand in hand with strong long-term performance based on a 10-year study that GuruFocus conducted for the period from 1998 to 2008.

In light of the above, value investors may be interested in the following three companies, as they have high GuruFocus business predictability ratings.
