The company has been gaining traction

Visa Inc. (V), a payments technology company connecting consumers, merchants and financial institutions through electronic payments, has been on investors’ radars recently for a number of reasons. Ranging from overall economy-wide factors to micro stock-level factors, Visa has gained decent traction among investors.

The U.S. economy has been registering strong gross domestic product growth, with the economy expanding 4.2% in the second quarter. Moreover, unemployment is at a record low, dropping to 3.7% in September. The strong economic position will help increase wages and disposable income.

With higher disposable income, consumers will spend more, which will lead to higher transaction

This sector is poised to benefit from upcoming rate increases

The market forces that spurred an investor retreat in stocks Thursday proved a boon for only one sector in the S&P 500 index, financial services.

Major market average declined as bond yields shot up, with the 10-year Treasury yield increasing above 3.2% for the first time since 2011. The rise resulted from a strong economy and a signal from Federal Reserve chair Jerome Powell that more interest rate hikes are likely ahead. By trading day’s end, the Dow Jones Industrial Average had slipped 0.75%, for a year-to-date gain of 8.07%. The S&P 500 (SPY) also settled down 0.78% for

Further outperformance of the main index could be ahead

A solid growth strategy has the potential to push Visa Inc.'s (V) stock price higher over the medium term.

Most of the opportunity exists in global markets. The electronic payments company could see a profit boost in Europe with the integration of its recently acquired subsidiary, Visa Europe, moving along ahead of schedule. It also has a dominant position in India, with intriguing chances for further innovation in its products and services. Growth for the global economy appears likely as well, though a full-scale global trade war could mute it to some extent.

Discussion of markets and holdings

The first quarter of 2018 brought back more normal volatility which has been rare in this recent era of artificially low interest rates. We are seeing a long overdue, much needed correction to help purge excesses in the global markets. Speculation has been boiling in the cryptocurrencies, along with pre-public technology stocks and can also be seen with record margin debt used to buy stocks. The excitement in January over lower tax rates, deregulation and strong corporate earnings has been replaced with concerns of higher commodity prices (oil up over 30%), wage pressures, transportation costs and rising interest rates which

Visa (V) is a marvel – an incredible cash-generating machine. Visa was one of our top performers in the fourth quarter and for the full year. The multiyear tailwind of the global transition away from cash transactions continues unabated, driving solid double-digit growth in payment volumes, transactions, revenues and earnings throughout the year. As of the end of the September quarter, Visa estimates that after all of these years only roughly 10% of global payment volumes are paid by card; with cash, check, and ACH still making up the overwhelming majority of transactions. We continue to expect Visa to benefit
