Bill Hwang might not have gone bust if he had followed Buffett and Munger's advice

Like so many wealthy investors, Bill Hwang put a premium on privacy and made full use of the opacity that a family office can enjoy compared to other species of investment firm. Unfortunately, the recent spectacular blow up of Hwang's family office, Archegos Capital Management, could not be kept private. Having wiped out an $8 billion fortune in the span of 10 days, Archegos has been pulled fully into the public spotlight over the past several weeks.

What blew up this multibillion-dollar investment firm in such short order? The same thing that has blown up so many

The EV maker sold a combined 182,780 Model 3s and Ys

Tesla Inc. (TSLA) released its first-quarter sales report on April 2. The electric carmaker delivered as many as 184,800 vehicles. The company also noted the first quarter was the best ever compared to any other previous quarters in terms of volume sold. Wall Street had anticipated 168,000 deliveries.

The company further broke down the numbers into a combined 182,780 units of Model 3 and Model Y deliveries.

Although Tesla issued its quarterly press release, the report lacked key information like region-wise production and delivery numbers.

The company is priced for total automotive market domination, but growing competition makes that prospect increasingly unrealistic

By almost any measure, Tesla Inc. (TSLA) had a great 2020. The upstart electric vehicle company saw deliveries soar to nearly 500,000 vehicles despite a global pandemic crimping global automotive sales. Tesla's share price soared 695% during the year, making it the most valuable automaker in the world by far – despite having less than 1% of global auto market share.

Clearly, Tesla's valuation has already priced in many years of truly spectacular growth. Unfortunately, there is mounting evidence that the EV maker will ultimately fall far short of the market's lofty expectations. Of particular concern

Declining solar installations and persistently negative margins have weighed on Tesla Energy

Tesla Inc. (TSLA) has won wide acclaim for its pioneering role in developing the modern electric vehicle market, but its ambitions stretch far beyond the automotive industry, as the company's mission statement makes abundantly clear: "Tesla's mission is to accelerate the world's transition to sustainable energy."

This mission has led Tesla to expand beyond its EV business into the renewable energy space, even though its EV business is not yet profitable (unless you count the sale of regulatory credits). Tesla Energy, its energy generation and storage segment, focuses on solar power manufacturing and installation, as well

Founded in 2001, the fund is part of Sarah Ketterer (Trades, Portfolio)'s Causeway Capital Management. The portfolio managers of the Los Angeles-based fund utilize a bottom-up, research-based investing strategy to identify value opportunities from among mid-cap and large-cap companies mainly in developed international markets, though it may invest up to 15% of total assets in emerging markets. In the consumer discretionary sector, we initiated a stake in Volkswagen (XTER:VOW3) midway through the period and added to our position through the remainder of the year. We are optimistic about the German automaker's ability to make the transition to the new age of electric vehicles given its internal buy-in and heavy investment.

The world's biggest carmaker may soon be the world's biggest electric carmaker

Volkswagen AG (XTER:VOW3) is making a big play in the electric vehicle space. Indeed, unlike the many other established automakers that have largely contented themselves with merely establishing beachheads in the still nascent EV market, the company has committed to an all-out offensive.

Such has been the sheer speed and intensity of the German automotive giant's campaign that many industry watchers have been left scrambling to adapt their models and forecasts for the EV market to account for this new contender.

An electrifying vision

The impetus for VW's aggressive bet on EVs grew out of

Volkswagen AG tops the list

Choosing stocks with compelling Shiller price-earnings ratios enhances the likelihood of identifying value opportunities, in my opinion. Thus, investors may want to consider the following stocks, as their Shiller price-earnings ratios are standing below the S&P 500 Index's historical average of 16.78 as of Friday, Jan. 15.

Volkswagen AG

The first company under consideration is Volkswagen AG (VWAGY), a German car manufacturer.

The company has a Shiller price-earnings ratio of 7.05, which is the result of a share price of $20.15 as of Jan. 15 and 10-year average inflation-adjusted earnings per share of $2.86 as of the most recent

New California executive order bans sales of new gas vehicles by 2035

California Governor Gavin Newsom signed an executive order last week that will ban the sale of new gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles by 2035 and have them replaced with electric and alternatively fueled vehicles.

The executive order takes a hard stance on the sale of new vehicles that are powered by fossil fuels and is a reaction to recent struggles with wildfires and longtime air-quality problems. According to Newsom's office, 80% of smog-forming pollution and 95% of harmful diesel emissions are currently caused by transportation needs in the state.

The elimination of sales of gasoline and diesel new car sales is

New products and new alliances could help the automaker get past a decade of disappointing results

With lots of attention focused on Tesla (TSLA) and Nikola (NKLA) these days, investors might forget about the former big three of American auto manufacturing. Ford Motor Co. The electric automaker responds to a recent shortseller report

The future is very difficult to forecast, but one trend that seems very likely to continue is the expansion of the electric car market. The biggest auto manufacturers in the world have recognized this too, with industry giants like Ford (F), General Motors (GM) and Volkswagen (XTER:VOW3) all investing huge amounts of money into the space. Ford even recently announced an electric version of its best-selling F-150 pickup truck - perhaps the least likely candidate for an electric makeover.

Suffice to say, there are strong desires in the industry to "electrify" every type of vehicle imaginable. One notable

The S&P 500 Index Committee added Catalent, Etsy and Teradyne to the index on Friday, but it excluded Tesla stock

One thing that has been driving Tesla (TSLA) stock recently is the expectation that it would be added to the S&P 500. However, that didn't happen, and investors started unloading the shares as a result. The S&P 500 Index Committee added Catalent (CTLT), Etsy (ETSY) and Teradyne (TER) to the index on Friday, but it excluded Tesla stock.

Potential bidders for the large engines unit increase as the business becomes more attractive

In May 2019, Volkswagen (FRA:VOW) announced that it was looking for potential buyers for its ship engine and power generator business, MAN energy solutions. As of Dec. 19, the large engines unit has attracted bids from Cummins (CMI), Mitsubishi Heavy (TSE:7011) and Innio.

The bids offered a tentative valuation of 1.5 billion to 2 billion euros (about $1.67 billion to $2.22 billion), falling short of the 3 billion euros Volkswagen expects to fetch from the deal. The carmaker has not yet begun an official auction process, but sources close to the matter expect to see a call for final bids
