US Indexes Close Higher Monday

S&P 500 closes at 3,288.13 with a gain of 0.70%

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 28,907.05 on Monday with a gain of 83.28 points or 0.29%. The S&P 500 closed at 3,288.13 for a gain of 22.78 points or 0.70%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 9,273.93 for a gain of 95.07 points or 1.04%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 12.35 for a loss of 0.21 points or -1.67%.

Monday’s market movers

U.S. indexes started the week closing higher on Monday. The Dow moved above 29,000 in intraday trading, but is yet to close at that level. Shares of Boeing (BA, Financial) were higher after Iran admitted unintentional responsibility for the downing of a Ukraine Air Boeing jet. Over the weekend, the U.S. also threatened to withhold banking access for Iraq if troops are expelled.

U.S. and China trade relations were in focus as China’s vice premier is scheduled to sign a “phase one” deal on Wednesday. The U.S. announced Monday it would drop the currency manipulator charges, helping trade relations. Other news also reported that the U.S. and China would begin semi-annual conferences in addition to discussions on the “phase two” trade deal.

Tomorrow, investors will begin to hear fourth-quarter earnings reports from banks, starting with JPMorgan (JPM, Financial). Other financial banking sector earnings this week include: Wells Fargo, Citigroup, Bank of America, Goldman Sachs, BlackRock, U.S. Bancorp, PNC Financial, Morgan Stanley and State Street. Dow Jones healthcare component United Healthcare will also release results this week.

Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • The Treasury held auctions for three-month bills at a rate of 1.53% and six-month bills at a rate of 1.53%.
  • The monthly Treasury budget statement for December showed a deficit of $13.3 billion.

In small caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,667.93 for a gain of 10.29 points or 0.62%. The S&P 600 closed at 1,020.33 for a gain of 9.49 points or 0.94%. The Dow Jones U.S. Small-Cap Growth Index closed at 10,746.36 for a gain of 82.27 points or 0.77%. The Dow Jones U.S. Small-Cap Value Index closed at 9,872.67 for a gain of 87.78 points or 0.90%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 2,068.14 for a gain of 16.77 points or 0.82%; the S&P 100 at 1,473.06 for a gain of 10.99 points or 0.75%; the Nasdaq 100 at 9,070.65 for a gain of 104.01 points or 1.16%; the Russell 3000 at 1,925.18 for a gain of 13.90 points or 0.73%; the Russell 1000 at 1,817.36 for a gain of 13.13 points or 0.73%; the Wilshire 5000 at 33,594.00 for a gain of 245.18 points or 0.74%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 755.10 for a gain of 4.97 points or 0.66%.
