Mohamed El-Erian, chief executive officer and co-chief investment officer at Pacific Investment Management Co., discusses the outlook for U.S. economy and Pimco's investment strategy. El-Erian talks with Tom Keene and Ken Prewitt on Bloomberg Radio's "Bloomberg Surveillance."

El-Erian is advocating a long-term and comprehensive package to the current economic problems faced by the US. He seems to admire the approach taken by China who typically takes a long term view. Chinese policy makers look 5 to 10 years ahead and deal with short term variance in a forcefully and innovatively, rather than more of the same.

On the investments, the bond fund manager says his firm is moving up in the quality spectrum.
