Improved Portfolio tracker

In an earlier article, I presented a Google spreadsheet to track your watch list stocks as well as your portfolio look through earnings. The sheet was well received and many people requested access to the sheet and gave some good feedback. Thanks for the feedback guys.

Someone who used the sheet to track his portfolio performance asked how the sheet could track sold positions? So, I went in and added a new sheet to track sold positions. On this new sheet, you enter information similar to that on the Portfolio sheet. Enter the stock symbol, quantity, purchase price, commissions, purchase date, sale price and sale date. The rest of the columns are computed and your sold position's performance is compared to that of the SPY. The total for all closed positions is then added up and presented on the Portfolio tracker tab.

On the portfolio tracker tab, you can see the overall performance of all your sold positions, similar to the open positions. The performance is displayed in $terms and % and compared to the SPY. Finally, the combined performance of both open and closed positions as a whole is displayed. The performance relative to SPY is displayed so you can also see how you did relative to the SPY as well as on an absolute basis.

I want to mention Jae Jun of Old School Value here. A lot of the ideas for this sheet came from him. He has a few portfolio tracking sheets on his excellent website as well.
