Writing for GuruFocus

Watching GuruFocus grow has been a pleasure for me, and I look forward to watching many more wonderful investors share their stories

July 06, 2020

"I believe myself that a good writer doesn't really need to be told anything except to keep at it."

- Chinua Achebe

"Don't tell me the moon is shining; show me the glint of light on broken glass."

- Anton Chekhov

There is an enormous difference writing as someone who theorizes about stocks and the market and as someone who actively manages assets and writes about individual stocks, portfolio performance and investment strategies. For many years I was the former, and now I am the latter.

The ability to pontificate without a care about performance or proving your record can be quite fun. Managing millions of dollars of other peoples' money creates an entirely different feeling in your stomach.

I have been blessed to partner with long term investors who give me the latitude, time and criteria to invest in my own particular manner. Most importantly, I have a group of investors who have committed to bringing my assets under management relatively quickly to a level where I will make a hard close to avoid being forced into SEC required oversight status. I simply couldn't ask for a better group of investors.

With such growth, I've found I've had to put any extraneous work aside and focus on finding new investments, building up portfolios and providing investors with the best possible service. Additionally, I've found it increasingly difficult to write without disclosing portfolio positions, potential investment ideas or proprietary information about our holdings.

Accordingly, this will likely be my last regular article posting here on Gurufocus. Readers will continue to be able to follow some of my writings in the public areas of the Nintai Investments LLC website.

Going forward, I look forward to continue reading the high-quality content we've all become accustomed to on GuruFocus.

Keep up the quality

One of the pleasures being a consumer of content at GuruFocus has been the outstanding quality writing that can be found here on the site. There is a plethora of writers who bring ideas and concepts that provide thought-provoking articles. That quality is the cornerstone of GuruFocus's value.

Innovate

I continue to be amazed by the new content and functionality being added to the site. I can think of few other assets that provide such a breadth and depth of data. This will remain Nintai's go-to site for investment research and corporate data.

Revel in your mistakes

Some of the most fun I've had is writing about investment mistakes and oversights. The ability to break down the process and outcomes of a really cocked up investment decision can reveal tremendous insights. Not enough writers tackle these on other websites, and that's a shame. You rarely learn anything from doubling your money, but there are a lot of insights when you lose half your position.

Remain positive

One of the great aspects of this site – from day one – has been the positive interactions between readers and writers. I want to thank everyone for all the tremendous support and great feedback you've given me over the years. Treating each other with respect and dignity seems old fashioned in today's world of on-screen temper tantrums and tweet storms. But over time, people will remember you far more for your class and respectfulness than any broadside or snide attack.

Thanks again to readers for all your wonderful comments, insights and feedback over the years. You have all made me a better writer, investor and person. I look forward to continue reading the work of other writers and meeting new GuruFocus members. Feel free to send me private messages and I will get back to you as soon as I can. My best wishes for a happy and prosperous future.

Tom, I'm very sorry we won't be seeing more of your writing, it has been excellent. In addition, I have really appreciated your support, particularly in my early years at GuruFocus!

I'm pleased to report that I continue to use the Macpherson Model in my own investment analyses and decisions. Discovery of your work and criteria has been a real highlight of my investing education.

Many thanks again for all your contributions!

Bob

Tom, I´m grateful I had the chance to learn from your wisdom. I also found a person who is extremely honest to himself and to other people: that are the traits of a real Value Investor (and, most importantly, of a researcher of truth). I will continue to follow you on Nintai and keep in contact, as far as possible. Good luck with your work and with everything! Nicola

Hi Tom,

Many thanks for helping me refine and adjust my investment thinking. I have enjoyed and learned a great deal from your articles and book. Your writings on the role of cash in a portfolio, avoidance of debt, and different types of durable competitive advantage should be helpful to any investor. Best wishes going forward, dj

You are right in many ways, but I think that being Guru of writing must be a lifestyle. Suppose writing is not your profession, so that you may have some adventures in the deadline for 3 hours. But with https://legitwritingservices.com/, you can find a professional who can write an article on any topic for not very big money and as fast as possible. That guys never fail you.

It`s a pity you`re leaving this site. Read your articles, and I must say, that I really like your writing style, it is very interesting and captivating. I wish I could write the same way, but my writing skills are too poor to write such interesting articles. Sometimes I use help of services when I need to do some work, and I`m sure one need to read more information about the companies before applying. The site https://www.topwritersreview.com/reviews/handmadewriting/ can be good enough for this purpose, as they prepared detailed reviews on different writing services, and these reviews are based on the real customers` feedback.
