US Indexes Close Lower for the Week of Sept. 11

Nasdaq up 21.7% year to date

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 27,665.64 on Friday with a gain of 131.06 points or 0.48%. The S&P 500 closed at 3,340.97 for a gain of 1.78 points or 0.05%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 10,853.55 for a loss of 66.05 points or -0.60%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 26.81 for a loss of 2.90 points or -9.76%.

For the week, the Nasdaq returned -4.1%, the S&P 500 was down -2.5% and the Dow Jones was down -1.7%. So far this year, the Nasdaq has a gain of 21.7%, the S&P 500 is up 3.41% and the Dow Jones is down -3.52%.

Friday's Market Movers

The major U.S. indexes were mostly flat Friday and closed lower for the week. Investors were cautious after a stimulus bill was blocked yesterday, leaving basically nothing currently on the table for negotiation.

Across sectors, technology led the day's losses. The S&P 500 industrial and materials sectors both led gains, up around 1.3%.

Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • The Consumer Price Index increased 0.4% in August and 1.3% year over year. The Core Consumer Price Index increased 0.4% in August and 1.7% year over year.
  • The Treasury's August Monthly Budget Statement showed a deficit of $200 billion, following a deficit of $63 billion.
  • The Baker Hughes oil rig count showed two less rigs in the U.S., four rigs added internationally and no change in Canada.

Small-Cap Stocks

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,497.27 for a loss of 10.48 points or -0.70%. The S&P 600 closed at 861.93 for a loss of 5.60 points or -0.65%. The Dow Jones U.S. Small-Cap Growth Index closed at 10,431.46 for a loss of 55.84 points or -0.53%. The Dow Jones U.S. Small-Cap Value Index closed at 6,966.56 for a loss of 27.92 points or -0.40%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,854.87 for a loss of 2.28 points or -0.12%; the S&P 100 at 1,549.92 for a loss of 1.11 points or -0.072%; the Nasdaq 100 at 11,087.40 for a loss of 66.72 points or -0.60%; the Russell 3000 at 1,946.98 for a loss of 0.56 points or -0.029%; the Russell 1000 at 1,852.12 for a gain of 0.20 points or 0.011%; the Wilshire 5000 at 34,025.96 for a loss of 9.09 points or -0.027%; and the Dow Jones US Select Dividend Index at 596.00 for a gain of 5.70 points or 0.97%.
