It wasn’t that long ago that the only high-speed thing about Alaska was its annual Iditarod sled dog race, perhaps the most demanding race on earth run in the dead zone of winter. Alaska, due to its cold temperatures and roadless immensity, was one of the last states to be able to embrace the Internet. As the temperature dips below freezing in Anchorage so does the stock price of a truly Alaska-based telecommunications company. If you have a $2 dollar bill, you could buy a share and get change. The stock is down 31% over the last 12 months.

The GuruFocus 52-week low screener reveals that Alaska Communications Systems Group, Inc. (ALSK, Financial) is at a 52-week low of $1.70 (high was $3.73). According to the GuruFocus Value Screen for 52-week lows, ALSK is 54.4% off high but nevertheless, is held by a couple of top billionaire investors who hold just a handful of shares.

Headquartered in Anchorage, Alaska Communications competes with a number of providers of high-speed wireless, mobile broadband, Internet, local, and long-distance services. The company network includes advanced broadband and voice networks and a diverse undersea fiber optic system connecting Alaska to the contiguous United States. With so much competition for coverage in new and remote areas of the state, company revenues have fluctuated dramatically for years.
